Legislation Regarding Private Lessons
NCAA rules has regulations that govern athletically related employment activities that must be documented by the institution.
There are two forms to be completed by current student-athletes who are teaching any NCAA sponsored sport on a fee-for-lesson basis. Approval (Fee-for-Lesson Approval form) must be granted by the Compliance Office PRIOR to providing lessons. The Fee-for-Lesson Documentation form (pdf) must be submitted on a monthly basis.
A student-athlete may receive compensation for teaching or coaching sport skills or techniques in his or her sport on a fee-for-lesson basis provided:
a) Institutional
facilities are not used;
b) Playing lessons shall not be permitted;
c) The institution obtains and keeps on file
documentation of the recipient of the lesson(s) and the fee for the
lesson(s) provided during any time of the year; and
d) The compensation is paid by
recipient (or the recipient’s family) and not another
individual or entity;
e) Instruction to each individual is comparable
to the instruction that would be provided during a private lesson
when the instruction involves more than one individual at a
time;
f) The student-athlete does not use his or
her name, picture or appearance to promote or advertise the
availability of fee-for-lesson sessions.
NCAA Legislation on Summer Leagues/Teams
The NCAA limits the number of student-athletes from one institution that may compete on the same summer team/club. This form (pdf) must be approved before the student-athletes start participating with an outside team and must be kept on file in the Compliance Office. Men's and women's basketball student-athletes must also complete this form (pdf) before receiving approval for participation.
