Bryant Track & Field Invitational Hightlights Another Busy Week For Bryant Sports

BASEBALL (8-19, 6-2 NE-10)
BULLDOGS IMPROVE TO 6-2 IN CONFERENCE PLAY WITH WEEKEND SWEEP OF SAINT ROSE
     After earning a midweek split with Southern New Hampshire, the Bryant baseball team picked up a three-game sweep over Saint Rose this past weekend, taking two at home (2-1, 5-2) and winning Sunday's finale, 2-0 in Albany, NY.   On Saturday, senior Chris Brown (Norwalk, CT) drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning, scoring senior Daryle Crowley (Danvers, MA) who doubled to lead off the inning.  Pitcher Eric Loh (Old Greenwich, CT) went nine innings allowing only one run while striking out six. Senior Paul Novakowski (Prospect, CT) went 1-3 with an RBI and scored three runs in game two. Sophomore pitcher Steve Salerno (Mt. Sinai, NY) went eight innings for Bryant with no earned runs and struck out seven.  The Bulldogs will host Franklin Pierce Tuesday (3:30 pm). 

SOFTBALL (2-11, 2-2 NE-10)
TEAM SPLITS PAIR OF CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADERS; HOSTS SAINT ANSELM TUESDAY
     The Bryant University softball team split a conference doubleheader with Assumption at home last Wednesday and followed with a split at Saint Rose Saturday.  After dropping the first game Saturday against the Golden Knights of Saint Rose, the Bryant bats came alive as the Bulldogs scored four runs in the top of the first including a three-run home run by senior Jordan Dargon (Trumbull, CT). Dargon finished the game going 3-for-3 with three runs and five RBI's. Junior Amanda Gagne (Wilbraham, MA) added a solo home run in the second inning.  
    On Sunday, the team dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Adelphi, falling 4-3 in the first and 8-3 in the second. In both games, Bryant held 3-0 leads only to watch the Panthers rally back. Gagne went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and 2 RBIs in the first game while pitcher  Janine Enos (Wareham, Mass.) struck out five. Bryant will host Saint Anselm Tuesday and Stonehill on Thursday at the Bryant Softball Complex. 

    
MEN'S TENNIS (5-3, 5-0 NE-10)
TEAM STAYS UNDEFEATED IN CONFERENCE PLAY
The Bryant men's tennis team picked up a pair of conference wins last week to stay undefeated to start the season at 5-0 (5-3 overall). After dropping a 7-2 non-conference decision to powerful Mercy (NY), Bryant won a pair of road matches at Merrimack (7-2) and Saint Michael's (6-3).  Ben Caisse (Griswold, Conn.) and Al Duro (Braintree, Mass.) are both 5-0 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively.  Sophomore Sean Authier (North Smithfield, RI) is 3-2 in conference play at No. 2 singles for the Bulldogs.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (8-1, 7-0 NE-10)
BULLDOGS  PERFECT IN NORTHEAST-10 
The Bryant women's tennis team stretched its current win streak to seven matches with a pair of conference wins last week.  The Bulldogs defeated Merrimack 9-0 Wednesday and followed with an 8-1 win at Saint Michael's Saturday.  Sacha Solomon (Bourne, Mass.), Alex Spence (Lynnfield, Mass.), and Annette Jervasi (Colchester, Conn.) are all undefeated in Northeast-10 Conference matches at Nos. 1 through 3 singles respectively with 8-0 records.  The Bulldogs will host Southern N.H. Tuesday before a showdown with Bentley College at the new Bryant Tennis Courts Thursday at 3 pm.

MEN'S LACROSSE (5-2, 3-1 NE-10)
BULLDOGS RANKED NO. 8 NATIONALLY
The eighth-ranked Bryant men's lacrosse team went 1-1 last week, earning a 20-0 win over American International Wednesday and dropping a 10-5 decision at top-ranked Le Moyne Saturday in Syracuse, NY.  Freshman Andrew Hennessey (Wading River, NY) won all 11 face-offs against AIC and won 23 of 29 face-offs against Le Moyne Saturday.  Bryant's top two scorers this season are both freshmen as attacker Matt McKeefrey (Melville, NY) has 11 goals and 8 assists while teammate Bryan Kauffman (Putnam Valley, NY) leads the way with 13 goals.  Kauffman had two scores Saturday against Le Moyne.
 
WOMEN'S LACROSSE (3-3, 1-2 NE-10)
BULLDOGS DROP PAIR TO NATIONALLY RANKED TEAM
    The Bryant women's lacrosse team dropped a pair of tough matches this past week, falling to No. 10 Merrimack 11-8 in overtime last Monday and coming up on the short end of a 21-8 decision at second-ranked C.W. Post Saturday in Brookville, NY.   Freshman Delia Glover (Marston Mills, Mass.) had four goals Saturday against C.W. Post. The Bulldogs travel to Bentley Thursday.

MEN'S GOLF
BULLDOGS IDLE LAST WEEK; VISIT YALE INVITATIONAL THIS WEEKEND IN NEW HAVEN
   The Bryant men's golf team was idle this past week and will return to action this weekend at the Yale Invitational in New Haven.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
BULLDOGS OPEN SEASON AT RIC; STEVENSON SETS PAIR OF RECORDS; BRYANT INVITATIONAL SATURDAY
    Picking up right where she left off after a record-breaking indoor season, Bryant junior sprinter Natasha Stevenson (Haverhill, Mass.) opened the spring season with a bang as two more records fell Saturday at the Rhode Island College Invitational.  Stevenson blew away Meagan Long's 2000 mark of 12.92 seconds in the 100 meters with a first-place finish in 12.30.   In the 200 meters, Stevenson captured first-place once again with yet another record time in passing Michelle Morris' 2002 mark of 26.64 by crossing the line in 26 flat. 
 On the men's side, sprinters Hafiz Greigre (Attleboro, Mass.) and Joe Brennan (East Providence, RI / La Salle) stole the show as Greigre cruised to a first place finish in both the 100m (10.70 seconds) and 200m (21.70).  Brennan took top honors in the 400 meters in a smooth 51 seconds.   The Bulldogs will host the annual Bryant Invitational on Saturday starting at 10 am.

BRYANT BLACK & GOLD GOLF TOURNEY SET FOR AUG. 1
The Bryant University Department of Athletics will host the annual Black & Gold Golf Tournament on Tuesday, August 1 at Cranston Country Club.  Last year's event drew more than 140 alumni and friends of Bryant University in support of the Bryant Athletic Department.  For more information on attending this year's tournament which will once again feature a dinner and auction, please visit www.bryantbulldogs.com.
