Bryant Sports News Update (pdf)

WHAT A WEEK FOR THE BULLDOGS!
It's going to be hard to top the past week in terms of success for the Bryant fall sports teams.  The Bulldogs posted an 8-3 record in 11 games this week, with only volleyball dropping three matches at the Bentley Invitational.  Football opened its season on a high note, men's soccer earned two conference wins, 10th-ranked field hockey won a pair of games, and women's soccer, ranked 25th nationally, stayed undefeated with two wins - including a 2-1 upset of No.5 Franklin Pierce at home on Saturday. Another busy week is on tap for the fall sports teams.

BULLDOG WEEKLY ROUNDUP ...

CROSS COUNTRY
Bryant senior cross country standout Nicole Radzik (Sutton, Mass.) placed first overall in the women's division Saturday at the Amherst College Invitational as the Bryant men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2007 seasons.   The Bryant women place fifth out of eight teams while the men were third overall out of seven teams competing on a hot and humid afternoon.

FIELD HOCKEY (3-2, 3-0 NE-10)
The Bryant field hockey team, ranked tenth nationally, remained undefeated in the Northeast-10 Conference, after defeating Saint Michael's 4-2 Saturday afternoon. The victory avenges the 2-1 loss the Purple Knights handed the Bulldogs in the Northeast-10 Quarterfinals last October. Bryant possessed the ball for most of the game, which led to a first half 1-0 lead, thanks to a penalty stroke goal by Caitlan Johnson (Walpole, MA) with nine minutes to play in the first half. It was Johnson's first of the season. The Bulldogs (3-2, 3-0 NE-10) will host Merrimack College Monday night (7 p.m.) in the home opener at the Bryant Turf Complex.

FOOTBALL (1-0, 1-0 NE-10)
Senior quarterback Charlie Granatell (Franklin Lakes, NJ) completed 11 of 17 passes for 104 yards while linebacker Paul Polomski (Franklin, Mass.) picked off two passes and recovered a fumble to help lead the Bryant University football team to a 13-6 win over visiting American International at a sweltering Bulldog Stadium Saturday.  Polomski's second interception in the fourth quarter helped seal the win as the sophomore returned the ball 44 yards for a touchdown.  The Bulldogs will travel to Merrimack College (0-1) this Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The game will be broadcast live on CSTV.com.

MEN'S SOCCER (4-1, 2-1 NE-10)
Senior co-captain Kyle Tierney (Westborough, MA.) scored in the 78th minute to lead the Bryant men's soccer team to its second straight Northeast-10 conference win, 1-0, over Southern N.H. Saturday afternoon at Sutton Field.

Tierney put home a rebound off a Patrick Bedard (East Longmeadow, MA.) shot to finally break the scoreless tie with time winding down. The Bulldogs had numerous opportunities to get on the board, including a cross bar hit by junior Manny Rodriguez (North Branford, CT) late in the first half.  The Bulldogs fired 13 shots, forcing Penmen goalie Dan Pelc to stop six shots. Bryant netminder Tom Madden (Saco, ME) stopped four shots for the clean sheet. Bryant (4-1, 2-1 NE-10) will take on Dominican College in a non-conference match Monday at Bulldog Stadium at 3 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (5-0-1, 2-0 NE-10)
The Bryant women's soccer team remained unbeaten in 2007 after upsetting Franklin Pierce, ranked fifth nationally in Division II, 2-1 Saturday night at the Bryant Turf Complex. The Ravens, who won the 2006 Conference title and the NCAA New England Regional, were the top-ranked club in the New England region entering Saturday's match, while Bryant was ranked fourth.  Trailing 1-0, Holly Tyser (Somers, CT) continued her strong start to the season with a goal to tie the game in the 23rd minute. The goal was Tyser's fourth of the year, second best on the team. Senior tri-captain Tricia Spada (Dedham, MA) tallied the game-winning goal in the 56th minute, booming a shot from 35-yards. Spada, who was last week's Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week, posted her fifth goal in as many matches.

With the win, Bryant is unbeaten in six matches to start the season, with a 5-0-1 record. The Bulldogs will take rival Bentley College in Waltham, MA Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., before returning home to take on AIC Thursday night (7 p.m.).

VOLLEYBALL (2-7, 1-0 NE-10)
The Bryant volleyball team went 1-3 at the Bentley Invitational over the weekend.  The Bulldogs picked up a 3-1 win over Georgian Court Saturday. Likica Grceva (Natick, Mass.) paced the Bryant attack with 20 kills while freshman Adrienne Boss (Dracut, Mass.) chipped in with 11 kills and had six blocks.  The Bulldogs will host Saint Anselm on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Chace Athletic Center and host the Bryant Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
