SPRING FOOTBALL GAME A SUCCESS; SPRING SPORTS CONTINUE TO EXCEL
The annual Black & Gold Spring Football game was a
success Saturday as more than 1,500 fans and alumni turned out to
see the offense squeak out a 26-25 win over the Bulldog
defense. Spring sports teams continue to excel, entering the
week with a combined 89-32 (.736) overall won-loss record and
impressive 57-7 (.891) in Northeast-10 Conference play. Three
spring teams are currently in first (softball, men's tennis and
women's tennis) with two teams in second (baseball, men's
lacrosse).
BULLDOG WEEKLY ROUNDUP ...
BASEBALL (25-13, 13-4 NE-10, 2nd)
Winners of four-straight and eight of its last nine, the
Bryant University baseball team is currently in second place in the
Northeast-10 Conference following a doubleheader sweep of
Assumption Saturday and a 12-3 makeup win over Saint Rose
Sunday. The Bulldogs have scored 43 runs in their last four
games. Nick Campbell (Raynham, MA) is
hitting .341 this season while Jason Alexander (Simsbury,
CT) is next at .333. Dylan Stone
(Portsmouth, RI / Portsmouth) is fourth entering the week
with a .299 batting average. The sophomore went 2-for-4 with three
RBIs in Friday's 10-4 win over C.W. Post. This week, Bryant
visits Southern Connecticut Tuesday and hosts the Owls Thursday
afternoon. Merrimack visits for a doubleheader Saturday
starting at noon.
SOFTBALL (15-7, 12-0 NE-10, 1st)
The first-place Bryant softball team travels to Merrimack
Monday for a make-up game from Sunday due to field
conditions. The Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from Stonehill
last Wednesday. Junior Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo,
NY) leads the team with a .357 batting average.
Senior pitcher Janine Enos (Wareham, MA) is 9-3
with a 1.54 ERA. This is a crucial week for the Bulldogs who
will host third-place UMass Lowell for a doubleheader Thursday
before heading to New York for a pair of games Saturday at
12th-place Saint Rose and two Sunday at second-place Le
Moyne.
MEN'S LACROSSE (9-3, 6-1 NE-10, 2nd)
Bryant, winners of six-straight, moved up to No. 5 in the
latest national rankings this week. Junior Kevin
Hoagland (Glastonbury, CT) scored 11 goals in three games
last week to give him 30 for the season. The Bulldogs host
Assumption Tuesday night at 7 pm and Saint Anselm this Saturday at
3 pm.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE (8-4, 6-2 NE-10, 4th)
The Bryant women's lacrosse team went 1-1 last week,
falling to Stonehill, 18-5 Wednesday before rallying for a 21-14
win at Southern Connecticut Saturday. Allison Faiola
(Billerica, MA) had five goals in the win over Southern
Connecticut while senior Caitlin Hansen (Spring Lake,
NJ) added four goals. The Bulldogs are at New Haven
Monday and will host Southern NH Saturday at noon at Bulldog
Stadium.
MEN'S TENNIS (15-3, 9-0 NE-10, 1st)
Ranked No. 45 nationally and third in the East Region, the
Bryant men's tennis team picked up a big 6-3 win over Stonehill
Saturday to stay atop the standings in the NE-10. Freshman
Cristian Balestrieri (Mar Del Plata,
Argentina) is currently 14-4 at No. 1 singles for the
Bulldogs while teammate Jose Rodriguez
(Trujillo, Peru) is 12-3 overall (10-2 at No. 2
singles). Captain Craig Drushella (Harwich,
MA) is 8-6 on the season. The team hosts Bentley
Wednesday and Mercy this Sunday at noon.
WOMEN'S TENNIS (17-2, 11-0 NE-10, 1st)
Ranked No. 3 in the East Region, the Bryant women's tennis
team ran its win streak to nine-straight matches as the Bulldogs
stayed atop the Northeast-10 Conference standings this past weekend
with wins over Stonehill and Assumption. Katharine
Francazio (Cranston, RI / La Salle) went a perfect 3-0 on
the week at No. 4 singles and improves to 18-1 on the year. Senior
Michelle Burke (Barrington, RI) also had three
wins at No. 3 singles this week. She is 15-4 on the season.
The Bulldogs host Bentley Wednesday and Dowling Saturday.
TRACK & FIELD
It was a record-setting day for the Bryant men's and
women's outdoor track and field teams as both squads took part in
the George Davis Invitational hosted by UMass Lowell Saturday
afternoon. On the women's side, Stephanie Montagano
(Wakefield, MA) captured first place in the women's 400
meters, shattering the school record with a time of 58.04 seconds
and in the process qualifying for the New England
Championships. Earlier in the meet, Montagano placed seventh
in the women's 200 meters in 26.82 seconds.
Distance runner Nicole Radzik (Sutton, MA) set a new school record with a first-place finish in the women's 5,000 meters. The senior placed first with a time of 18:04.31 good enough to also earn a qualifying standard for the New England Championships in May. On the men's side, freshman Thomas O'Connor (Westwood, MA) took home third place in the men's 400 meters in 49.72 seconds.
MEN'S GOLF
The Bryant men's golf team placed second at the Le Moyne
Invitational. Senior Nick Caccia (Riverside, RI) earned
medalist honors with a first-place finish overall. Results
will be posted online later Monday afternoon.
BULLDOG NOTES ...
BULLDOG BLACK & GOLD GOLF TOURNAMENT
This year's annual Black & Gold Golf Outing will be
held July 30, 2008 at the Crystal Lake Golf Club in Burrillville,
RI. Last year's successful outing was also held at Crystal Lake.
The Black & Gold Club Golf Outing is held to raise money for
the school's Black & Gold Club. The Black & Gold Club is
the Athletics department's main fundraising arm, and goes to
supporting student-athletes and coaches through scholarships and
capital projects. The format of the event will be Texas Scramble.
The cost is $150 per golfer or $600 per foursome. Please contact
