FOOTBALL TEAM HOSTS ANNUAL BLACK & GOLD GAME SATURDAY; SPRING
SPORTS TEAMS OFF TO GREAT START
The Bryant University football team will conclude spring
practice with the annual Black & Gold Spring Football game
scheduled for this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
at Bulldog Stadium. There will be a post game BBQ immediately
following the game ... Bryant's spring sports teams are off to a
great start to their respective seasons. Three teams are
currently in first place in the Northeast-10 Conference standings
with two in second place and one in third. Overall, Bryant's
spring teams are 40-5 (.888) in conference play so far this
season. Women's lacrosse will host first-place Stonehill
Tuesday night at 7 pm.
BULLDOG WEEKLY ROUNDUP ...
BASEBALL (19-12, 9-3 NE-10, 3rd)
The Bryant baseball team will be busy this week.
After earning a split with Franklin Pierce and taking two of three
against Saint Anselm over the weekend, the Bulldogs will begin a
stretch of eight games in eight days Tuesday hosting Stonehill at
3:30 pm. Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, RI /
Portsmouth) is hitting .275 with nine doubles and 22
RBIs.
SOFTBALL (12-6, 10-0 NE-10, 1st)
The Bryant University softball team moved to 10-0 in
conference play with a doubleheader sweep of AIC Sunday. The
Bulldogs split a key regional match with Adelphi Saturday in Long
Island. Pitcher Janine Enos (Wareham, MA)
moved to 8-3 on the season and brings a 1.69 ERA into the week. The
Bulldogs host Stonehill Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 3
pm.
MEN'S LACROSSE (6-3, 3-1 NE-10, 2nd)
Junior Kevin Hoagland (Glastonbury, CT)
scored three goals as the Bryant men's lacrosse team picked up an
important 7-5 win over No. 6 Merrimack Saturday at Gillette Stadium
in Foxboro, MA. The Bulldogs, which moved up a spot from No.
7 to No.6 in the country this week, are currently in second place
in the NE-10 standings behind first place Le Moyne. Bryant
will travel to Bentley Wednesday and visit Pace and Franklin Pierce
this weekend. Hoagland has a team-high 19 goals on the season.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE (7-3, 5-1 NE-10, 2nd)
Under the direction of first-year coach Jess Davos, the
Bulldogs are in position for a run at the conference title this
season. Bryant is currently in second place in the league
standings at 5-1 but host first-place Stonehill (5-0) Tuesday night
at the Bryant Turf Complex (7 pm). Freshman Tamara
Bender (Mount Vernon, NH / Souhegan) had a career-high
seven goals in the team's win over Merrimack last Wednesday.
MEN'S TENNIS (13-3, 7-0 NE-10, 1st)
Under the direction of second-year coach Ron Gendron, the
Bryant men's tennis team is currently ranked No. 3 in the East
Region and last week were rewarded for the team's excellent start
to the season with the school's first-ever national ranking.
The ITA announced the first national poll last week with the
Bulldogs coming in at No. 45. Freshman Cristian
Balestrieri (Mar Del Plata, Argentina) is
currently 12-4 at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs while teammate
Jose Rodriguez (Trujillo, Peru)
is 11-3 overall (9-2 at No. 2 singles). Captain Craig
Drushella (Harwich, MA) is 7-5 on the season.
WOMEN'S TENNIS (14-2, 7-0 NE-10, 1st)
The Bryant women's tennis team is also No. 3 in the East
Region and last week earned three more victories. Bryant
knocked off Merrimack (9-0) and AIC (9-0) and Holy Family (8-1) to
move to 14-2 on the season. Newcomer Emma
Czarnecki (Huntington Woods, MI) is 8-2
at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs. Senior Michelle Burke
(Barrington, RI) is 12-4 this season while Katharine Francazio
(Cranston, RI / La Salle) is 15-1 (10-0 at No. 4).
TRACK & FIELD
The Bulldogs were idle this past week and will return to
action Saturday at the UMass Lowell Invitational this
Saturday.
MEN'S GOLF
Sophomore Jason Thresher (West Suffield,
CT) earned co-medalist honors with a brilliant two rounds
at the Yale Spring Opener over the weekend in New Haven.
Thresher finished tied for first with a 2-over par 72 on Saturday
and 1-over par round of 71 Sunday as the Bulldogs placed
11th out of 21 teams competing. Harvard was the
over winner with a two-day round of 585. Bryant has
traditionally always played well at Yale. This year came
through with another solid showing as the Bulldogs, with a two-day
score of 599, finished ahead of several Division I schools
including Rutgers, Iona, Colgate, Dartmouth, Quinnipiac and
Providence.
BULLDOG NOTES ...
BULLDOG BLACK & GOLD GOLF TOURNAMENT
This year's annual Black & Gold Golf Outing will be
held July 30, 2008 at the Crystal Lake Golf Club in Burrillville,
RI. Last year's successful outing was also held at Crystal Lake.
The Black & Gold Club Golf Outing is held to raise money for
the school's Black & Gold Club. The Black & Gold Club is
the Athletics department's main fundraising arm, and goes to
supporting student-athletes and coaches through scholarships and
capital projects. The format of the event will be Texas Scramble.
The cost is $150 per golfer or $600 per foursome. Please contact
