PACE DEFEATS BRYANT 2-1 SUNDAY

SMITHFIELD, RI - Jack Cawley doubled in the tying run and catcher Chris Brown lined a single into right to score the Cawley with the game-winner as Pace University rallied back to earn a 2-1 win over Bryant University in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action here Sunday. With the win, Pace (14-10) completes a three-game weekend series sweep over the Bulldogs after taking a pair on Saturday in Pleasantville, N.Y.
Bryant (12-10, 6-4 NE-10) scored its lone run in the first inning as Paul Novakowski (Prospect, Conn.) ripped a two-out single to center off Pace starter Matt Reilly. After moving up to second on a Reilly wild pitch, Novakowski came around to score on a single to center by Nick Tucarella (Salem, N.H.).
From there, both teams struggled to push across a run as Bryant starter Matt Gaynor (Hyde Park, N.Y.) held the Setters to just three hits through six innings. But the visitors would start to get to Gaynor in the seventh. Pace's Ted Mullen lead off the inning with a walk, and pinch runner Ray Caronia moved up to second on a sacrifice by Brian Hollrah. Caronia would come around to score moments later on Cawley's double to left center.
That would be all for Gaynor as Bryant reliever Brian Fioretti (Hungtington, N.Y.) came on to pitch with the go-ahead runner at second. After walking Mike Pahira, the junior leftie got Matt McMichol to ground out to third for the second out of the inning. However, Pace would get a clutch hit by Brown who singled to rightfield, just past the reach of second baseman Adam Vuolo (Walpole, Mass.), to score Cawley from second and make it 2-1 Pace.
Tucarella and Daryle Crowley (Danvers, Mass.) each had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs who will Saint Anselm on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) at the Bryant Baseball Complex.
