Saturday's Doubleheader Postponed
Box Score
SMITHFIELD, RI - Bryant freshman pitcher Luke Cowan (Wilton, Conn.) pitched eight strong innings, allowing just one earned run and five hits to lead the Bryant University baseball team to a 5-2 win over Southern Connecticut here Friday.
Bryant (10-6, 4-0 NE-10) and Southern Connecticut came into the game tied for first in the Northeast-10 Conference and both starting pitchers locked into an early duel. SCSU starter Matt Hennessey (Wallingford, Conn.) retired the first Bryant batters he faced. However, the Bulldogs would get to the junior lefty in the bottom of the third. Chris Brown (Norwalk, Conn.) started the inning off with a double to right and would come around to score on a throwing error by Hennessey on a sacrifice bunt by Jason Alexander (Simsbury, Conn.).
Alexander would come around to score two batters later on a triple down the left field line by Mickey Ryan (Lowell, Mass.). Ryan, a returning all-American for Bryant, would score the inning's third run on a sacrifice fly by Daryle Crowley (Danvers, Mass.).
The Bulldogs would build a 4-0 lead before the Owls would cut the lead in half with a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh, courtesy of a leadoff home run to left by Jeremy Terni (Uncasville, Conn.). For Terni, it was his second round-tripper of the season.
Southern Connecticut (5-6, 3-1 NE-10) would put two runners on in the ninth but Ryan would come in to pitch in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Bryant and Southern Connecticut will play a doubleheader Sunday in New Haven, Conn. Saturday's game has been rained out.
