Baseball Goes for Northeast-10 Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament Berth Sunday Against Franklin Pierce
LOWELL, MASS. - The Bryant baseball team will go for their seventh Northeast-10 Championship and a NCAA automatic berth Sunday when they take on Franklin Pierce at noon.
The Bulldogs (31-20) need just one win Sunday to win the tournament and secure a bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the Ravens must take both games from the Bulldogs. Bryant last appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2004 when they advanced to the College World Series.
The first game is at noon, with the second at 3 p.m. if necessary. Both can be heard live on bryantbulldogs.com with Pat Sullivan and Brad Davis calling all of the action starting at 11:50 a.m.
The Bulldogs got through the winner's bracket after beating #2 UMass-Lowell 5-4 in 14-innings on Friday, and then downing #1 Franklin Pierce 7-3 Saturday. The Ravens rebounded with a 5-1 win over Pace Saturday night to reach the championship.
Brent Almeida (Fairhaven, Mass.) will get the start in game one, with Eric Loh (Old Greenwich, CT) scheduled to pitch game two if necessary.
Bryant has won both games in this tournament due to timely clutch hitting from Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, CT), Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) and Mark Dondero (Medfield, Mass.) among others. They received two excellent starts from Dan Lozeau (Pelham, NH) and Kevin Cobb (Acton, Mass.) as well as great relief appearances from Adam Vuolo (Walpole, Mass.) and Eric Polvani (Wallingford, CT).
Following Sunday's game(s), the Division II NCAA Tournament seeds and pairings will be revealed at 8 p.m. on ncaasports.com. The top six teams in the Northeast region will qualify for the tournament. The Bulldogs were ranked fifth as of Wednesday.
