BASEBALL GETS BACK ON TRACK WITH A 10-4 WIN AT C.W. POST FRIDAY
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The Bryant University baseball team scored three runs in the fifth inning and added another four in the eighth to pick up a 10-4 non-conference win at C.W. Post Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers (14-16) held a 2-1 advantage going into the top of
the fifth frame, when C.W. Post starter Keith Karlsen loaded the
bases with one out for sophomore first baseman Dylan Stone
(Portsmouth, RI). Stone drew a walk to score Mark
Dondero (Medfield, Mass.) before Nick Campbell
(Raynham, Mass.) singled through the left side to plate
Jason Alexander (Simsbury, Conn.) and Dave
Muscatello (Hopkinton, Mass.) for a 4-2 lead.
The Bulldogs (22-11) tacked on another run in the next inning, when Alexander, Muscatello and Stone teamed up again to go up 5-2. Alexander and Muscatello knocked out back-to-back singles before Stone made it three straight hits, taking Karlsen's first offering to centerfield to bring home Alexander.
Things were quiet on the offensive front through the next two frames, but the Bryant bats came to life again in the eighth.
Pioneer reliever Dan Walsh got the Bulldogs' first two batters to go down on four pitches before giving Muscatello a free pass to first on a full count. Walsh plunked Alexander, and loaded the bases with a walk to the next hitter, Stone.
A wild pitch allowed Muscatello to take home plate for the inning's first run before Walsh issued another walk -- his third in two innings of work -- to Campbell to load up the bags again, this time for slugger Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass.).
O'Connor sent a two-RBI single into left field, scoring Stone and Alexander and chasing Walsh from the hill in favor of Eric Stampfl.
A passed ball moved the runners to second and third before Campbell was awarded home plate on a balk for the inning's final tally.
C.W. Post reclaimed two of those runs in the eighth, but it wouldn't be enough, as the Bulldogs added a single tally in the ninth for good measure and a 10-4 final score.
Stone went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored on the day, while Dave Muscatello was 1-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored to lead Bryant. The Pioneers were led by 3-for-4 outings from both Mike Sylvester (2 runs) and Kyle Walker (3 RBI).
Friday's contest was a make-up from a game originally scheduled to be played in Florida this past February. The Bulldogs continue their nine-games-in-eight-days stretch, staying on the road to travel to Worcester, Mass. for a Saturday doubleheader against Assumption College before trekking to Albany, NY Sunday for a single game against Saint Rose.
