BRYANT TAKES 10-3 WIN OVER PHILADELPHIA U. SUNDAY AFTERNOON BEHIND SEVEN SHUTOUT INNINGS FROM COBB
PHILADELPHIA -- Junior Kevin Cobb (Acton, Mass.) pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits while striking out four to lead the Bryant University baseball team to its fifth-straight win, a 10-3 victory over Philadelphia University at the Rams' Alumni Field Monday afternoon.
Bryant (8-3) first baseman Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, RI) got the scoring going with an RBI-single in the top of the second inning, and two more Bulldogs would cross the plate on run-scoring sacrifice flies in the third and fourth to give Cobb the 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs chased Philadelphia (0-3) starting lefty Brian Rousseau from the mound in the top of the fifth, cranking out three runs on four hits, highlighted by an RBI-triple off the bat of sophomore centerfielder Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.). Campbell would go on to score on a subsequent fielding error to bring the score up to 6-0.
But with rookie righthander Victor Quint on the mound for the home team, the Bulldogs exploded again for four more in the sixth, a run closed out by designated hitter Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass.), who belted a two-run opposite-field home run to right. O'Connor's shot was the only long ball on the day, and the junior transfer's fourth of the young season and second in as many days.
The Rams finally got on the board in the eighth with a Tyler Mentzer leadoff double off Bulldog freshman Scott Merritt (Norwalk, Conn.), and Mike Anderson brought Mentzer around with a sacrifice RBI two batters later.
The Rams took rookie righthander Matt Griswold (Berlin, Conn.) for two more in the bottom of the ninth, but it wouldn't be enough to stop the Bulldogs from a 10-3 victory.
Rousseau yielded six runs, four of them earned, in four-plus innings of work for the loss, while Cobb worked seven shutout frames to earn the win and move to 2-1 on the year for the Bulldogs.
Mentzer finished the day 4-for-5 from the plate for the Rams. Senior captain Jay Alexander (Simsbury, Conn.), Campbell and Stone each finished the day 2-for-4 from the plate, with Alexander and Campbell each crossing the plate twice. Stone and Campbell both registered two RBI on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs continue south on their Spring Break
trip to next play Pfeiffer University, Tuesday, March 11 at 3
