BRYANT FALLS TO SAINT ANSELM, 3-1, SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Boxscore

SMITHFIELD, RI. - Riding a three-run, three-hit fourth inning, Saint Anselm College took a 3-1 win over the Bryant University baseball team Saturday afternoon at the Bryant Baseball Complex.

Senior Eric Loh (Old Greenwich, Conn.) threw a complete-game loss, allowing just four hits while striking out seven, but the Hawks (7-14, 3-7) were able to capitalize on one of just two walks to get the scoring started in the top of the fourth.

Rookie Dave Wirkus drew a leadoff walk to open the frame before Adam Hussey put runners on the corners with a no-out single. Matt Stone - who would eventually score Saint Anselm's third run - followed with a single of his own to plate Wirkus and get the Hawks' first run on the board.

A Ryan O'Rourke groundout to second sent Hussey across the plate for the inning's second run, and Stone was brought home himself on an Eric Baca single the next at bat.

The three-hit fourth proved enough to beat the Bulldogs (17-12, 7-3) and ace Loh (5-1), as Bryant mustered just a single run in the affair. That run came in the third, when Jason Alexander (Simbury, Conn.) singled home Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.) in a one-run, two-hit frame.

Both teams were kept off the board after the fourth, with both pitchers going the distance. Neil Hesek got the win for the Hawks, allowing one run off five Bulldog hits and striking out one.

TJ Magnell (Leominster, Mass.) led Bryant, going 2-for-2 from the plate, while Alexander, Ferguson and Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) accounted for the remainder of the Bulldogs' hits. Hussey paced the Hawks with a 2-for-4 day and a run scored.

Bryant and Saint Anselm return to action April 6 for a Sunday doubleheader at the Bryant Baseball Complex to close out the season series. First pitch is 12:00 p.m.
