BRYANT BASEBALL TRAVELS TO DAVIDSON, N.C. THIS WEEKEND
The Bryant University baseball team heads back out on the
road this weekend when the Bulldogs travel to Davidson, North
Carolina for three games. There has been a change to the weekend's
schedule. Friday's game with Davidson has been moved to Saturday.
The Bulldogs will play UNC-Asheville Saturday at 11 am and will
face Davidson at 5 pm. Sunday's game with Davidson at 1 pm is still
on. Bryant is 0-3 on the season while Davidson (6-2) enters
a mid-week two-game series at Auburn, winners of five
straight. UNC-Asheville (2-4) dropped two of three at the
College of Charleston over the weekend and face Wofford and East
Tennessee this week.
LAST WEEK'S OPENING WEEKEND IN LOUISIANA
The Bryant University baseball team looks to bounce back
from last weekend's trip to Thibodaux, La. for the Big Boy Classic
that saw the Bulldogs drop all three games. After rain pushed
back the opener back to Saturday, Bryant fell to host Nicholls
State 4-3 in the first of two the team would play on its opening
day. Following the loss, a game that saw starter Eric
Polvani (Wallingford, Conn.) allow just one earned run
through eight innings, the Bulldogs fell to Houston???Baptist 15-5
in the nightcap. On Sunday, the Bulldogs led 3-2 heading into
the top of the eighth against Tennessee-Martin but couldn't hold on
as the Skyhawks rallied for a 6-3 win.
QUICK HITS
- Bryant was picked to finish 5th in the NEC this season,
the school's first as a member of the conference. The Bulldogs are
not eligible for the postseason tournament but will be included in
the league's standings.
- Bryant was 32-22 last season including 8-1 at home
- Entering the year, Bryant returns its top two hitters from a
year ago in senior catcher Jeff Vigurs (.389, 9 HR) and senior
centerfielder Nick Campbell (.375, 3 HR).
- Campbell is Bryant's all-time career hits leader with 257
- With 49 doubles in his career, Vigurs needs five doubles tie
Scott Yankee for the most in a career at 54.
NICE DEBUT
Three newcomers made a solid debut last week at Nicholls
State's three-game tourney. Freshman left fielder
Kevin???Brown (Northborough, Mass.) hit .364 in
three games, collecting four hits including a pair of
doubles. Junior Zak Cianciolo (Prospect,
Conn.), a transfer from???UConn-Avery Point, batted .333
for the weekend with a double and RBI. University of Vermont
transfer David Soltis (Plainville, Conn.) hit.200 with a home run
in the sixth inning of the opener against Nicholls State and the
Bulldogs trailing 4-0.
NO NEED TO WORRY
Bryant opened last year, its first competing at the
Division I level, dropping the weekend series at Mercer College,
but bounced back to win five-straight including a win over Virginia
Tech.
CAMPBELL'S ADDING ON
Senior centerfielder Nick Campbell (Raynham,
Mass.), Bryant's all-time career hits leader, a mark set
as a junior last year, added four more hits over the weekend to
give him 261 in his career.
HOLDIN' STEADY
Senior catcher Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor,
Conn.) has been solid behind the plate during his career
and enters his final year atop the all-time career fielding
percentage list (.994). Vigurs has played in 175 career games
and started in 174. Against Tennesse-Martin last Sunday,
Vigurs went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double.
POLVANI GETS OFF TO STRONG START
Senior pitcher Eric Polvani (Wallingford,
Conn.) had a strong outing in the team's opener against
Nicholls State Saturday. The righty went eight innings
allowing just one earned run on seven hits in a 4-3 loss to the
Colonels. Polvani, Bryant's current career ERA???leader
(2.34) struck out three and didn't walk a batter in the game and
only gave up two extra-base hits.
SUNDAY SAL
Freshman RHP Salvatore Lisanti (Bronx,
N.Y.) made a fine debut against Tennessee-Martin on
Sunday. The newcomer gave up two runs in the second inning
but after the Bulldogs came back to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom
of the second, Lisanti kept the Skyhawks scoreless on just three
hits over the next five innings before giving way in the
eighth. The Bulldogs would end up falling to UTM, 6-3.
