SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- After a 10-game road trip, the Bryant University baseball team finally returns home Wednesday afternoon, hosting Boston College in the 2010 home opener at the Bryant Baseball Complex starting at 3:30 p.m.  Senior Eric Polvani goes to the mound against the Eagles where he’ll be faced by Taylor Lasko.  The Bulldogs are 2-8 on the season with wins over VMI and Virginia Tech last week.  Boston College enters Tuesday’s game at UConn with a 6-8 record after taking one of three against the University of Miami over the weekend.  The Bulldogs will visit Northeastern Friday (3:30 pm) in the first of three against the Huskies this weekend.  Bryant and NU will meet on Saturday in Smithfield, R.I. and close out the weekend with a game in Boston on Sunday (1 pm).

LAST WEEK
Bryant went 2-2 last week, picking up a pair of wins on the road over Virginia Military Institute and Virginia Tech to wrap-up its 10-game season opening road trip with a 2-8 overall record.  The Bulldogs hit .307 during the week and turned four double plays.  Freshman Kevin Brown (Northborough, Mass.) and Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) each had a pair of hits in the win over VMI Monday.  Junior Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.) followed with a  4-for-5 performance in a loss to Virginia Tech Tuesday but teammate Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) followed with a four-hit performance in the team’s 5-3 win. Closer Mark Andrews (Hillsborough, N.J.) picked up saves in both games and finished the week with six strikeouts and just two walks allowed.

KELICH NAMED ROOKIE OF THE WEEK BY THE NEC
Bryant University freshman pitcher Peter Kelich (Jackson, N.J.) was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week on May 15, Bryant’s first conference award in baseball this season. Kelich’s first collegiate start yielded a victory over ACC member Virginia Tech on Wed., March 10. The rookie right-hander allowed only two runs (one earned) and five hits over 8.0 innings of winning baseball against the Hokies. He worked around three walks and struck out five batters as Bryant hung on for a 5-3 win. He threw 114 pitches to help the Bulldogs to their second win of the season while lowering his ERA to 2.92. The rookie of the week award is the first of the year for the Bulldogs and first NEC award.

QUICK NOTES ...

* Bryant is led offensively by senior Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) who is hitting a team-best .395 with four doubles and six RBI. He is Bryant’s all-time career hits leader with 272 and needs 28 to reach 300 for his career.

* Campbell and teammate Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor,Conn.) are giving chace for the all-time career doubles record of 54 held by Scott Yankee.  Campbell is closing in with 51 career two-baggers while Vigurs is next with 49.

* Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, RI) each had four-hit games last week.  English had four in a loss to Virginia Tech on Tuesday while Stone followed with a four-hit game of his own, going 4-for-5 in the team’s win over the Hokies Wednesday.

*Campbell owns the longest current hit streak at 7 games entering the Boston College game this Wednesday.  Freshman Kevin Brown (Northborough, Mass.) posted the season’s longest so far at eight games. English has hit safely in the last five.

* Bryant has out-scored its opponents 8-2 in the first inning this year (1-4 when scoring first), however opponents have outscored the Bulldogs 12 to 5 in the second inning.

* Bryant is 2-0 when leading after the 8th inning (2-2 when leading after the seventh).

* Freshman Peter Kelich (Jackson, N.J.) pitched eight strong innings in his first-ever start against Virginia Tech on Mar. 10 and picked up his first win, allowing two runs and striking out five.

* Bryant and Boston College met twice last year with the Bulldogs winning 8-5 (also the home opener) and the Eagles winning 16-8 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. on April 21. 

* Bryant and Northeastern met twice last year with the Bulldogs winning both games.  Bryant won at Northeastern on April 14, 8-4 in Boston and 4-3 in Smithfield, RI on May 11.

* Bryant was picked to finish 5th in the NEC this season, the school’s first as a member of the conference. The Bulldogs are not eligible for the postseason tournament but will be included in the league’s standings.

* Bryant was 32-22 last season in its first year of Division I including an 8-1 record at home.
