SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University Kevin Brown (Northborough, Mass.) has been named Rookie of the Week by the Northeast Conference the league announced Monday. He is the second Bulldog to receive the Rookie of the Week, joining teammate Peter Kelich (Jackson, N.J.) who earned the same honor two weeks ago.
Brown, a graduate of Algonquin Regional High School, rebounded from an 0-for-3 day in the NEC series opener at Monmouth last Friday by recording sevens hits, six RBI, and five runs over the ensuing three games that saw the Bulldogs split the weekend series with the Hawks.
Manning the leadoff spot during the four-game set, the rookie went 7-for-15 (.467) at the plate with four extra-base hits. He homered in each of his first two at-bats as part of a three-hit, three-RBI performance during the first half of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Moving from left field to designated hitter for the second half of the double dip, Brown produced three more hits, two of which were doubles, and two RBI to help Bryant to a 10-1 win over the defending NEC champion. He recorded a hit, run, and RBI in the series finale, a 7-6 Bulldogs’ victory.
Brown is currently second on the team with a .310 batting average and leads the team with 13 runs scored, seven doubles and 13 RBI. Earlier this season, he registered at least a hit in his first eight games in a Bulldog uniform.
Bryant (5-13) will travel to Marist College on Wednesday for a 3 pm non-conference game. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but has been moved to Wednesday due to heavy rains in the region. Bryant is scheduled to travel to Fairfield on Thursday before returning home to host the University of Hartford on Friday.
