WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - The Bryant University baseball team
rallied from a 1-0 deficit with a run in the seventh and a run in
the top of the ninth to earn a 2-1 win over Monmouth University and
earning a split in the four-game series with the Hawks.
Bryant improves to 13-7 on the season while Monmouth drops to
7-8.
Sunday's game was a pitcher's duel early as both starters looked
sharp. Monmouth scratched across a single run on an infield
hit in the bottom of the fifth off Bryant starter Kevin Cobb
(Acton, MA).
The Bulldogs managed a pair of hits over the first three innings
against Monmouth starter Nick Meyers before Brett Brach came on to
pitch the fourth for the Hawks and pitched well into the seventh
before the Bulldogs put together a little two-out rally.
Brach got both Nick Campbell (Raynham, MA) and Pat O'Connor
(Mattapoisett, MA) to strike out but singles by Jeff Vigurs (South
Windsor, CT) followed by a single up the middle by Jordan English
put the tying run at second base for the Bulldogs.
But Brach and the Hawks would get out of the inning as Mike
DelPonte (Tewksbury, MA) grounded out back to the pitcher to end
the scoring threat by Bryant.
The Bulldogs would finally break through an inning later to tie the
game at 1-1. Freshman Jamie Skagerlind (Holden, MA) singled
up the middle to lead off the inning. With Connor Carignan
(Norwich, CT) running for Skagerlind at first base, Tom Norton
(Barnstable, MA) moved Carignan into to scoring position with a
sacrifice bunt.
Carignana would move up to third on a groundout to short by Pat
McKenna (Orange, CT), but with two outs, Dylan Stone (Portsmouth,
RI) got the tying run home with a single to right field.
Monmouth would get out of the inning as O'Connor struck out
swinging to end the inning.
The Bulldogs would again rally in the ninth. With Nick
McNamara on in relief of Brach, McNamara would get Vigurs to ground
out to begin the inning. However, singles by English and
Scott Merritt (Norwalk, CT) followed by a walk to Dan Mello
(Peabody, MA) loaded the bases with just one out.
Norton would answer the call with an infield single on the right
side scoring English from third with the go-ahead run.
Monmouth would escape any further damage as McNamara got McKenna to
ground into an inning-ending double play.
Cobb gave way to Mark Andrews (Hillsborough, NJ) in the ninth and
the sophomore lefty got Brett Holland to ground out with the tying
run on second and give the Bulldogs the win. It was Andrew's
fourth save of the season as Cobb picked up his fourth win of the
season (4-0).
English and Skagerlind each had a pair of hits on the afternoon for
the Bulldogs who will return to action Wednesday with a
non-conference game at Rhode Island (3:30 pm) before heading to
Long Island University for a four-game series next weekend starting
Friday with a 3 pm game.
