BRYANT BASEBALL TAKES OUT RICHMOND, 4-2, THURSDAY IN RUBBER GAME OF THREE-GAME SET

Boxscore

RICHMOND, VA. - Senior Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass.) roped a two-run double to right center in the top of the seventh inning to drive in what would prove to be the game-winning RBI as the Bryant University baseball team grabbed a, 4-2, win over Richmond on Thursday to take two-out-of-three from the Spiders in the series. The victory was the seventh in the last eight games for the Bulldogs, putting their record at 7-1 over spring break with one three-game series remaining against James Madison.

Bryant (7-3) struck first in the ballgame, as freshman Jamie Skagerlind (Holden, Mass.) reached on an infield single in the second inning and would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch to stake the Bulldogs to an early 1-0 lead.  Skagerlind was two-for-four in the game with an RBI.

Senior starting pitcher Kevin Cobb (Acton, Mass.) was outstanding on the mound, only allowing one Spider baserunner through the first four innings before surrendering a run in the fifth to tie the game on a ground out back to the mound. Cobb gave the Bryant bullpen some much needed rest, going eight innings and striking out two while allowing just two runs on five hits.

With the score knotted at one apiece going into the seventh, Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) got the Bulldogs going with back-to-back singles with one out, setting the stage for O'Connor. O'Connor ripped a one-out double to right center off of Spider reliever Josh Horn that broke the tie and scored both Campbell and Stone to give Bryant a, 3-1, lead. It was O'Connor's lone hit of the game, while Campbell had three in five tries. Skagerlind tacked on another run with a two out single to push the Bulldog advantage to 4-1.

Another RBI groundout came in the bottom of the seventh for the Spiders (9-3) to cut the lead to 4-2, but the squad continued to struggle against a dominant performance by Cobb on the mound. It was the senior's second win of the year, giving him a record of two wins and zero losses.

Mark Andrews (Hillsborough, N.J.) shut the door in the ninth to pick-up his second save of the year, as the Bulldogs continue to roll since dropping their first two games of the year.

Bryant will have Friday off before starting a three-game series against James Madison with a double-header on Saturday (12 p.m. and 2 p.m.).
