CAMPBELL RECORDS HIT NUMBER 200, BUT BULLDOGS FALL AT MONMOUTH, 8-1, FRIDAY AFTERNOON
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Junior centerfielder Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.), drove a double down the right field line to record his 200th career hit, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs fell to Monmouth, 8-1, Friday afternoon. It was the first game of a four game set that will continue with a double-header Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped Bryant to 11-6 overall while Monmouth evened their record at 6-6.
Junior pitcher Kyle Breese was solid for the Hawks in his seven innings of work, surrendering just one run on eight hits while striking out seven to earn the win. His offense helped him out by putting 15 hits on the board, including three apiece from Brett Holland and Josh Boyd as Monmouth recorded their fifth-straight victory.
Besides Campbell's career mark, the Bryant offense also saw junior Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) extend his hitting streak to 16 games while Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) pushed his to 13 with a single in the eighth.
The Hawks (6-6) opened the scoring by tallying three times in the third inning, all coming with two-outs off of Bulldog starter Eric Polvani (Wallingford, Conn.). The rally started with an infield single by Chris Collazo, followed by a walk by Ryan Terry to put two on with two out. The runners would move to second and third after a wild pitch, and scored on a two-run double by Nick Pulsonetti. Rick Nierderhouse would single to right field to bring home the third run, giving Monmouth a 3-0 lead.
Polvani would be knocked out in the sixth inning, allowing five runs on 12 hits in 5.1 innings, but just two were earned as the Bulldogs committed four errors in the game.
Boyd brought home a run with a single in the sixth, and Holland would bring him home with a double later in the inning to extend the Hawk lead to, 5-0 after six innings. Boyd was three-for-four in the game with two RBI. Nick Laude (Wells, Maine) shut the door with a runner on third and one out in the inning, retiring the first two batters he faced.
Bryant (11-6) got themselves on the board in the top of the seventh, as Tim Norton (Barnstable, Mass.) laced a two-out single to left center field that plated Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.) to cut the deficit to 5-1.
But that would be all the Bulldogs would get, as the Hawks had three more runs cross the plate in the seventh, aided by two errors by the Bryant defense to take a commanding, 8-1, lead. Steve Sanguiliano would relieve Breese in the eighth, clinching the win for the home team as he went two innings and surrendered just one hit.
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back in the series against the Hawks, one of the top teams in the Northeast Conference, as they play a double-header on Saturday before finishing up the four-game set with one on Sunday (12 p.m. and 2 p.m.).
