BULLDOGS SLUG THEIR WAY TO 14-8 WIN OVER UMASS LOWELL FRIDAY

Box Score

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bulldogs belted out 14 runs on 18 hits on the afternoon to take down former Northeast-10 conference rival UMass Lowell, 14-8, at the Bryant Baseball Complex on Friday. The two teams combined for 22 runs and 35 hits as 21 different players recorded at-least one hit in the contest.

Pat McKenna (Orange, Conn.), Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) and Tim Norton (Barnstable, Mass.) each had three hits in the contest to lead the Bryant attack, with McKenna driving in two runs and scoring three while extending his hitting streak to 15-straight. Campbell also score three times, making it the ninth-straight game he has scored a run.

Eight of the nine starters recorded hits in the game with nine different players driving in runs. Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) had his 15th multi-RBI game, as he and Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass.) drove in three runs each.

UMass Lowell (16-9) took the first lead of the game with a three run first inning, with all the runs coming home on a dropped fly ball in the outfield with the bases loaded to give the River Hawks a 3-0 lead.

Bryant (25-10) responded with two of their own in the bottom of the first, as O'Connor singled to bring home Campbell and McKenna to cut the deficit to 3-2.

John Michael Ryan (Worcester, Mass.) settled into his start after a shaky first, going 5.1 innings while allowing only one earned run and striking out six to get his third win of the year. The sophomore struck out back-to-back batters in the top of the third to get out of a two-on, one-out jam, keeping Bryant within striking distance at the time.

Ryan had some help from his defense, as McKenna and Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) both flashed some leather in the fourth, robbing UMass Lowell of a couple of hits. McKenna made a diving play up the middle on a ground ball, spinning and throwing from his knee to get Graeme Clausey at first base. Stone followed suit, making a barehanded play on a bad hop near the second base bag to throw out Connor Burnham.

A three-run fourth gave the Bulldogs a lead that they would not relinquish, as they rallied against River Hawk reliever Cam Kneeland. McKenna tied the game with a double to left center field that one-hopped the fence, bringing Connor Carignan (Norwich, Conn.) in to score all the way from first base to knot the teams at three apiece. Campbell gave Bryant its first lead with a one out single to right center that plated McKenna, and Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.) provided some insurance with a two out single down the line in left to put the Bulldogs up 5-3.

Bryant broke the game open in the fifth, sending 12 batters to the plate as part of an eight-run inning that put the Bulldogs up by double-digits. The Bulldogs amazingly did all of the damage with two outs, as seven-straight men reached base with two down to spark the eight-run rally.

Vigurs highlighted the inning with his bases loaded triple to dead center field that hit off the fence and rolled away from center fielder Luke Wallace, allowing O'Connor, Stone and McKenna all to score and put Bryant up 9-3. The Bulldogs were not finished though, putting together four-straight singles to score four more runs in the inning, as Jamie Skagerlind (Holden, Mass.), Norton, Carignan and McKenna all brought in runs. Norton had two singles in the inning as he extended his hitting streak to five-straight.

Nick Laude (Wells, Maine) took over for Ryan in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out, getting Pat Devlin to strike out swinging and Sean Burns to pop out to shortstop to end the threat. Brian O'Neil (North Reading, Mass.) also pitched well out of the bullpen, working a scoreless seventh.

Bryant tacked on another run in the sixth, while UMass Lowell struck for three in the eighth and one in the ninth to cut into the lead, but it was not enough against the Bulldogs. Bryant improved to 6-0 at home with the victory, as they have to wait another 12 days before they host another home game.

The Bulldogs are next in action on Tuesday when they travel to play Northeastern (3:00 p.m.).

Notes:

  • Pat McKenna extended his hitting streak to 15-straight games with an infield single in the second.
  • Jeff Vigurs has now reached base safely in 34 consecutive games, extending his hitting streak to 12-straight with his big fifth-inning triple.
  • Jordan English and Pat O'Connor each moved their hitting streaks to eight in a row.
  • Tim Norton had his second consecutive three hit game, pushing his hitting streak to five-straight.
