BRYANT FALLS IN GAME ONE, 9-5, TO FLORIDA ATLANTIC IN
BACK-AND-FORTH BATTLE FRIDAY NIGHT

Box Score

BOCA RATON, FLA. - Florida Atlantic University scored runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take a late lead that they would not let go of, as they beat the Bulldogs, 9-5, Friday night in Boca Raton. The teams exchanged leads five different times throughout the game, with the Owls scoring one run in the seventh to take the lead while adding on three more runs in the eighth to put the game away.

The Owls (19-16) got on the board first, scoring a run on a throwing error to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Travis Ozga hit a ground ball single, and David Wilson came around to score on the error to draw first blood against Bryant starter Kevin Cobb (Acton, Mass.) Cobb went five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out one.

Tim Norton (Barnstable, Mass.) tied the game in the top of the second, driving a two-out triple to left field that scored Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.) all the way from first to knot the game at one apiece. English had two hits in the contest, pushing his hitting streak to ten-straight games.

Bryant (26-11) took its first lead in the game in the third, scoring a run without a hit. Pat McKenna (Orange, Conn.) and Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) started the inning with a pair of walks, and McKenna moved to third on a fly out by Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.). The senior shortstop then came around to score on a sacrifice fly to left by Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass.) to put the Bulldogs on top 2-1. O'Connor, who was coming off a three RBI game against Northeastern, drove in two more Friday night.

Florida Atlantic put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim a 3-2 advantage, with both runs scoring on a one-out double by Nick Criaris.

Two runs in the top of the fifth and another in the sixth gave Bryant the biggest lead of the game for either side, leading 5-3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. O'Connor drove in his second run of the contest, singling through the right side to bring home Stone from second to tie the score at three. Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) followed that up with an RBI groundout to second that allowed Campbell to come in from third to put the Bulldogs back in front, 4-3.

McKenna tacked on the fifth run with a single to left in the sixth, scoring Connor Carignan (Norwich, Conn.) from second to extend the Bryant advantage to two runs. McKenna moved his hitting streak to 17 games with the single, tying Vigurs for the longest such streak on the team this season.

The Owls responded with two runs off Cobb in the bottom of the sixth, as Nick DelGudice doubled to right center to plate both Troy Bubley and Jeremy Griffiths, tying the game at 5-5. Nick Laude (Wells, Maine) replaced Cobb in the frame, getting a pair of ground outs mixed in with a couple of walks to get out of the inning.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Vigurs laced a double to right center to give Bryant a runner in scoring position and English coming to the plate. The sophomore right fielder hit a rope to third, but was robbed by a diving play from Bubley to keep the teams tied at five.

Florida Atlantic broke the tie in a strange way in the bottom of the seventh, as Laude was replaced after hitting the leadoff batter by Matt Griswold (Berlin, Conn.). With two down in the inning, the Owls had Tom Hatcher on third and Bubley on first. Griswold was able to catch Bubley wandering off of first, as Bryant was able to get the third baseman out in a rundown, but not before Hatcher came across to score from third to give Florida Atlantic the 6-5 edge late in the contest.

Five-straight singles to start the eighth helped the Owls tack on three more runs to pad their lead, taking a 9-5 lead into the ninth.

Adam Morrison got the win on the mound for Florida Atlantic, going 7.1 innings while surrendering five runs on eight hits. Chris Schmitt got the save, finishing off the last 1.2 innings to clinch up the win in game one of a four-game set.

Bryant and Florida Atlantic play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m.

Notes:

  • Pat McKenna extended his hitting streak to 17 games with an RBI single in the fifth.
  • Jeff Vigurs reached base safely in his 36th-straight game while moving his hitting streak to 14 in a row with a double in the sixth.
