FLORIDA ATLANTIC USES EIGHTH INNING RALLY TO GET
PAST BULLDOGS, 5-4, SUNDAY

Box Score

BOCA RATON, FLA. - Florida Atlantic scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, coming back from down 4-1 to claim a 5-4 win over the Bulldogs in the final game of a four-game series on Sunday. It was the first time this season Bryant has been swept in a series, as they fell to 26-14 on the year following the four-game sweep at the hands of the Owls.

With the score tied at 1-1 heading into the top of the eighth, the Bulldogs put three-runs

Senior Pat O'Connor extending his hitting streak to 13-straight games with an RBI single in the eighth. He is hitting .511 in that stretch with two home runs and 12 RBI.

across the plate to break the tie and take a 4-1 lead. After Owl starter Brent Adheen was replaced with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) lined a single to right center off of reliever Chris Schmitt to put Bryant on top, 2-1. Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass.) followed with an RBI single of his own, and Jeff Vigurs (South, Windsor, Conn.) finished the rally with a run scoring ground out to second, giving the Bulldogs a little padding with a three-run advantage.

Mark Andrews (Hillsborough, N.J.) entered the game in the bottom of the eighth to replace starting pitcher Eric Polvani (Wallingford, Conn.), looking for the two-inning save. After the first two batters reached on hits, Andrews was able to get a strike out of Nick Criaris to put runners on first and second with one down. Anthony Mesa followed with a single up the middle to score Troy Bubley from second, cutting the lead to 4-2.

David Wilson followed with a fly out to right for the second out of the inning, but William Block came up clutch with a two-out triple to the gap in right center field that scored both Mesa and DelGuidice, tying the game at 4-4. Travis Ozga stepped up next, singling up the middle to plate Block and give the Owls to 5-4 lead late in the ball game.

Glen Troyanowski came in to close out the game for FAU, getting Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) to ground out to second with two-men on to seal up the victory. The Owls have now won five-straight games.

Bryant took the lead in the first inning of the contest, as Vigurs singled through the right side to score Pat McKenna (Orange, Conn.) with two outs, staking the Bulldogs to the early 1-0 lead. Vigurs knocked in two runs in the game and eight in the series to lead the team, while McKenna scored six runs and extended his hitting streak to 20 games.

Polvani was solid once again, holding that lead through the first three inning including getting out of a bases loaded and nobody out jam in the bottom of the second. The junior struck out DelGuidice and Criaris before getting Colby Gratton to ground out to escape unscathed.

The Wallingford, Conn. native made just one mistake in the game, allowing a one-out home run to DelGuidice in the bottom of the fourth that tied the game at 1-1. Polvani went seven innings, giving up just the one run on eight hits while striking out seven. In his last five appearances, the right-hander has posted a 3-0 record with one save, going 34 innings and allowing only five earned runs while striking out 33.

Bryant looks to break their four-game skid as they travel to take on Boston College on Tuesday for the second time this year, beating the Eagles earlier this season by a final of 8-5 (3:30 p.m.).

Notes:

  • Pat McKenna extended his hitting streak to a team season-best 20 games, going two-for-four with two runs scored to give him seven hits in 12 at-bats in the series.
  • Pat O'Connor pushed his hitting streak to 13-straight games with an RBI single in the eighth. During the streak, the senior is hitting a blistering .511 with two home runs and 12 RBI.
  • In Eric Polvani's last five appearances, the junior has gone 3-0 with one save while posting a 1.32 ERA in 34 innings.
