 MCKENNA JOINS 200-HIT CLUB AS BULLDOGS FALL, 3-2 AND 4-3, IN DOUBLEHEADER SUNDAY AT NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - Pat McKenna (Orange, Conn.) hit a single to right field in the third inning of game one in a doubleheader at NYIT, giving him 200 hits for his career as the Bulldogs fell, 3-2 and 4-3, in a pair of down-to-the-wire contests on Sunday. McKenna is the seventh Bulldog in the history of the program to register 200 hits, joining teammate Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) who accomplished the same feat earlier this season.

Effrey Valdez hit a two-out, game winning single off of Bryant reliever Matt Griswold (Berlin, Conn.) in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Bears to a 3-2 win in game one. The loss snapped a ten game Bryant winning streak, as the Bears swept the doubleheader to earn a split in the four game series.

NYIT had put runners at the corners with one down, when Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) fielded a ground ball and cut the run down at home, keeping the Bulldogs alive. Valdez came up two batters later, shooting a single to left to plate the game-winner.

John Michael Ryan (Worcester, Mass.) went the first 6.1 innings on the mound for Bryant. He allowed just two runs on seven hits before being replaced in the seventh after surrendering a one out single.

Bryant (22-9) took the first lead of the game, as Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn) brought in a run with a single down the left field line, staking the visitors to a 1-0 advantage. English had hits in both games, giving him a season-best four game hitting streak.

NYIT scored solo runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead, going ahead on a one out single by Eric Cos that plated Christian Dienna. Dienna went three-for-three in the contest.

Trailing, 2-1, in the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs once again got a clutch hit from their captain, as McKenna hit a two-out single to right field to tie the game at two and keep the Bryant hopes alive. McKenna went two-for-four in game one, adding on two more hits in game two to extend his hitting streak to ten.

Game two was another nail biter, with the Bears scoring late again to take a lead, this time doing it in the eighth inning. Chris Ruffler came up with a pinch-hit single with one out in the bottom of the eighth to bring in the eventual game-winning run, as Cos came around from second base.

Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) had given the Bulldogs the early lead, belting a two-run home run to right center field in the top of the second to stake Bryant to a 2-0 lead. Vigurs has now reached base safely in 30-straight games, while moving his hitting streak to eight with a pair of hits on the day.

McKenna plated another Bryant run with a single through the right side in the sixth, extending the lead to 3-0. The senior was two-for-three while freshman Connor Carignan (Norwich, Conn.) also had a two-hit game.

Chris Foundas (Needham, Mass.) started the game on the mound, going 5.2 innings while allowing two runs on four hits. Foundas had shut the Bears out over the first five before running into trouble with two outs in the sixth as he turned it over to his bullpen.

NYIT scored twice in the sixth, once in the seventh and one more in eighth to get the win. George Carroll brought home the first run in the sixth with a running scoring fielder's choice, and Sebastian Grazziani drew a walk to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Dienna completed the comeback in the seventh, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home the game-tying run of Nick Laude (Wells, Maine.).

The pair of losses was the first time the Bulldogs had been swept in a doubleheader since Feb. 28 against Mercer. Bryant will look to get back on track on Tuesday as they travel to play URI (3:30 p.m.).
