BULLDOGS STAY UNBEATEN AT HOME WITH 8-2 WIN OVER HARVARD
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant University baseball team rallied for six runs in the second inning off of Crimson starter Will Keuper, as the Bulldogs improved to a perfect 5-0 at home with an 8-2 win over Harvard Wednesday afternoon at the Bryant Baseball Complex. The victory was the 12th in the last 14 games for the black and gold, giving them a total of 24 wins through 33 contests at the Division I level.
Dan Lozeau (Pelham, N.H.) got his fifth win of the season, moving his record to 5-0 for the year after allowing just two runs in 5.2 innings. The bullpen also came in and got the job done, as Nick Laude (Wells, Maine) and Mark Andrews (Hillsborough, N.J.) combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings in relief. Laude retired the first five batters he faced before allowing a single in the eighth, going 2.1 innings and giving up just the one hit. Andrews finished the game in the ninth, allowing one hit in a non-save situation.
The Bulldogs (24-9) exploded for six runs in bottom of the second as Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) led off the inning with a double to left center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.). Jamie Skagerlind (Holden, Mass.) followed with an infield single, beating out a dribbler down the first baseline to score Vigurs with the first run. But the Bulldogs were not through, as Tim Norton (Barnstable, Mass.) and Conor Carignan (Norwich, Conn.) followed with base hits of their own, with Carignan bringing in the second run of the inning on his single through the left side. Both runners came home on a double to center by leadoff batter Pat McKenna (Orange, Conn.), finishing off a stretch of four-straight Bulldog hits.
With the heart of the order at the plate, Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) and Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass.) both reached on singles bringing Vigurs back to the batters' box. Just as he did leading off the inning, the Bulldog junior laced his second double of the inning to right center scoring Campbell with the sixth run of the frame to put the home team up 6-0.
Campbell had a huge day at the plate as the junior went 4-for-5 with two RBI, hitting singles in each of his final four at-bats. McKenna was also big, coming just a home run short of the cycle while driving in a pair of runs of his own to push his hitting streak to 13-straight. All nine starters in the batting order for Bryant had a hit in the contest, as the team piled up 18 hits for the game.
McKenna showed what he could do with the glove as well, saving a sure base hit and a possible run with a diving catch in the second inning to rob Sean O'Hara with two down. He did it again in the ninth, this time making a sliding play up the middle on Dan Zailskas and throwing the runner out at first from his knees.
Harvard (7-20) had a major threat in the fifth inning, loading the bases with three-straight singles to start the frame. But, Lozeau got the number three hitter, Matt Rogers, to ground into a 4-6-3 double play, allowing a run to score but getting two outs. The senior then got clean-up hitter Harry Douglas to ground out to third to end the inning.
Bryant tacked on two more runs in the game, as Campbell brought in McKenna, who had tripled to start the inning, with a single in the sixth. O'Connor finished up the scoring in the eighth with a one out single to left, scoring Carignan from third to push the lead to, 8-2.
Vigurs continued his streak, reaching base safely for the 32nd consecutive game while getting a hit in his tenth-straight. English also got a single, to make it his sixth-straight game with a hit. The 24 wins so far this year is three better than last year at this time, as the Bulldogs had 21 victories while playing at the Division II level at the same time in 2008.
The Bulldogs travel to play Brown Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. before returning home Friday to host UMass Lowell.
