Steve Owens completed his first year as the Bulldogs skipper in 2011, leading his program to their 4th consecutive 30 win season.  In just his first season at the reigns, Owens led Bryant to a fourth-place regular season finish in the Northeast Conference en route to a 30-23 overall record (19-12 NEC). The Bulldogs also picked up 11 non-conference victories, competing against a challenging lineup of quality opponents both in and out of region, and had three players (Dave Soltis, Mark Andrews and Kevin Brown) earn All-NEC honors.

Owens came to Smithfield with high expectations, as the Bulldogs went 34-22 in just their second Division I season during the 2010 campaign, winning the 2010 Northeast Conference regular-season title with a 25-7 league mark. The architect of 20 consecutive winning seasons, the 2011 season was his 14th 30-win campaign and pushed his career record to 617 wins against only 322 losses and 1 tie. His career winning percentage of .657 currently ranks him 21st in the nation for active Division I coaches, the only Northeast region coach currently listed in the top 25.  On top of team success, Owens has seen 29 of his former players sign professional contracts, including current major leaguer Andy Parrino, an infielder with the San Diego Padres.

Owens came to Bryant from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y., where he led the Division I Dolphins to 11-straight winning seasons.

In his time at the helm of the Dolphin program, Owens led his team to four MAAC regular-season titles and reached a career landmark in 2007, becoming one of the youngest coaches in the nation to reach the 500-win plateau. Entering the 2010 season, he owned the 13th-highest career winning percentage among all active Division I coaches and left Le Moyne with a 342-217 record at the school.

Owens also brings a long list of accolades to Smithfield. The 2004 and 2006 MAAC Coach of the Year, he has been named the conference Coach of the Year seven times, ABCA NCAA Regional Coach of the Year on five occasions and is a 10-time recipient of the Louisville Slugger Coaching Award.

Over a 20-year career at Bryant, Le Moyne and Division III Cortland State, Owens has guided 14 teams to 30-win seasons, and his clubs have made 15 postseason appearances, including three NCAA DI tournament berths. Owens also guided Cortland State to a 245-82-1 record, seven NCAA Division III regional tournaments and four trips to the Division III College World Series.  His career post-season record stands at 54-33 (.620) and he has won 12 regular season Conference Championships.

Owens has also lofted his players to new individual heights, coaching 13 All-American selections, two Freshman All-American picks, 32 All-MAAC selections, 3 All-NEC selections, 16 All-Region nods and 3 Academic All-Americans.

A native of Sauquoit, N.Y., Owens is a 1987 graduate of St. Lawrence, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Sport and Leisure Studies. Playing baseball and football at St. Lawrence, he was named a two-time MVP in baseball playing at both third base and shortstop. He finished his career with a .349 batting average, including .454 as a senior, and stole 73 bases in 80 attempts. In football, he led the team in rushing his junior and senior seasons scoring 18 career TD’s and was named offensive MVP as well as Outstanding Senior Athlete. In the fall of 2010, he was inducted into the St. Lawrence Athletic Hall of Fame.

Drafted by the Chicago Cubs, Owens spent two seasons with the organization, including stints in Geneva (New York-Penn League Champions) and with the Charleston (W.Va.) Cubs in the South Atlantic League.

Following his playing days, Owens was a graduate assistant coach in football and baseball at Ithaca College where he received a Master of Science degree in 1991.

Owens, 47, and his wife, Catharine, have three children, Jack, Sam and Jane.
