EASTON, Mass.-- Freshman quarterback Charles Granatel (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) threw for 149 yards and three touchdowns to lead Bryant to a 31-6 Northeast-10 Conference football victory over Stonehill Saturday afternoon at Chieftain Stadium.
The win equals Bryant?s win total of a year ago and improves Bryant?s record on the road to 2-1 this season.
Granatel connected with junior wideout Shane Cheltenham (Lynn, Mass.) for two scores on the afternoon, as the visiting Bulldogs (3-3, 3-3 Northeast-10) jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter advantage on a Granatel-to-Cheltenham 13-yard touchdown pass that came after a 36-yard field goal by senior Pete DiMartino (Ansonia, Conn.). The host Chieftains (2-3, 2-3 Northeast-10) closed to within four at 10-6 early in the second quarter when freshman quarterback Greg Borsari (Kingston, Mass.) found junior Mike Plichta (Milford, Mass.) for a seven-yard scoring strike, but Bryant used Granatel?s second touchdown pass of the day, a 16-yarder to sophomore Justin Kix (Shoreham, N.Y.), with 47 seconds remaining in the half to take a 17-6 lead at the break. Cheltenham hauled in his second score of the day, a 10-yarder, early in the fourth quarter to extend the Bulldog lead to 24-6, and junior J.P. Scott?s 19-yard scamper with 6:42 remaining closed out the scoring for Bryant in the contest.
Cheltenham and Kix combined for seven receptions and 79 yards to go with their three scores for the Bulldogs, while sophomore Chris Peaks (Silver Spring, Md.) rushed for a career-high 131 yards on 29 carries as part of Bryant?s 350 yards of total offense. Senior Bob Powell (Weymouth, Mass.) rushed for 71 yards on 11 carries as part of a 197-yard attack for Stonehill (119 of which came on the ground), as Plichta hauled in six total receptions for 59 yards.
Sophomore Andrew McClarty (College Park, Md.) posted six total tackles to lead the charge defensively for Bryant, which also recorded a pair of interceptions and two sacks, while freshman Mike DeBye (Burlington, Mass.) made a career-high nine solo tackles to pace Stonehill on the defensive side.
Stonehill travels to Waltham, Mass. next Saturday afternoon to renew its longstanding rivalry with Bentley in a Northeast-10 outing that kicks off at 2:00 p.m., while Bryant hosts Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 match-up next Saturday afternoon in Smithfield, R.I. that begins at 1:00 p.m.
