Former La Salle Football Standout Transfers From UMass
SMITHFIELD, RI -- Bryant University has announced that UMass-Amherst sophomore tailback LORENZO PERRY (Providence, RI / LaSalle) has transferred and will play football for the Bulldogs starting in 2005. The announcement was made today by Director of Athletics Dan Gavitt and Head Football Coach Marty Fine.
Perry, who did not play this past season for the Minutemen, was the backup tailback as a freshman in 2003 and saw plenty of action on kickoff returns. The 5-6, 182-pounder returned 12 kicks for 228 yards for an average of 19.0 yards per kickoff return. In a game with Hofstra, Perry had 91 all-purpose yards, including a long of 34 yards on a kickoff return. He did have two rushes for a total of four yards against Kansas State. "We are pleased to have a player of Lorenzo's ability join our program at Bryant," said coach Fine. "He was an outstanding player at LaSalle and will be a great addition to our team."
As a player for Tim Coen as La Salle, Perry had 1,443 yards rushing and 26 touchdowns as a senior. In addition, he caught 12 passes for 165 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Perry had a pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns in earning Gatorade Player of the Year honors in Rhode Island in 2002.
During his career, he totaled 4,469 yards on 409 carries and had 85 career touchdowns in earning all-state and all-conference honors all four years. In 2000, Perry was named the Most Valuable Player of the Rhode Island Super Bowl after rushing for 235 yards and three touchdowns. He was also a member of the National Honor Society at LaSalle.
Bryant, a Division II member of the Northeast-10 Conference, posted a 4-5 mark during Fine's first-year in 2004. The Bulldogs open the 2005 season hosting American International on Saturday, September 3 at Bulldog Stadium.
