THE GAME: The Bryant University football team returns home this Saturday to host Division III Becker College for a non-league game at Bulldog Stadium. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Bryant, winners of four of its last five, will be looking to set a new school record for wins in a season. The Bulldogs tied the 1999 and 2002 teams with its fifth win of the season last Saturday with a 27-0 shutout of Saint Anselm in Manchester, NH. It was the second shutout of the year for the Bulldogs and fourth overall since football became a varsity sport at Bryant in 1999. Becker, located in Worcester, Mass., brings an 0-5 record into Saturday¹s game. This is the first varsity season of football for the Hawks.
BULLDOGS BLANK SAINT ANSELM 27-0 LAST WEEK: The Bryant football team equaled the school record for wins in a season last Saturday, earning its fifth win of the year with a 27-0 win over Saint Anselm in a game played in Manchester, NH. Charles Granatell (Franklin Lakes, NJ) completed 13 of 27 passes for 173 yards. The sophomore signal caller had a pair of touchdown passes - 63 yards to Vincent Norris (Washington, DC) and 12 yards to Justin Kix (New Shoreham, NY) without throwing an interception in a game played in a steady downpour. Lorenzo Perry (Providence, RI), fresh off his school record 313 yards the week before against Stonehill, had 50 yards on 19 carries. His 11-yard touchdown run in the first staked the Bulldogs to a 7-0 lead and proved to be all the points Bryant would need on the day. Seven different receivers had a reception led by Shane Cheltenham¹s (Lynn, MA) four catches for 23 yards. Kix had three grabs for 47 yards. Greg Daniel (Providence, RI) led the defensive effort with 10 tackles while freshman Paul Budz (Queens, NY) had a season-high 7 tackles including a sack. Bryant¹s defense also picked up three interceptions on the afternoon with David Boak (Oradell, NJ), Emanuel Holmes (Miami, FL) and Andrew Verdura (Haverhill, MA) each recording an INT.
THE HAWKS OF BECKER COLLEGE: This will be the first-ever meeting between Bryant and Becker on the football field this Saturday as the Bulldogs host the Hawks for Parents & Family Weekend. This is the first football season for the Division III member of the North Atlantic Conference located in Worcester, MA, though Becker will compete as an independent in football only. David Dunn is in his first year coaching the Hawks, who are 0-5 coming into the Bryant game. A native of Trumbull, Conn., Dunn was previously an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic for two seasons and was an assistant at Harvard for one year. Last week, Becker dropped a 42-13 decision to Hartwick at home. Trailing 35-0 in the second, Becker¹s Andrew Siafa returned a kick 90-yards for a touchdown to make it 35-7 at the half. Freshman running back Jesse Delgado rounded out the scoring with a late 2-yard touchdown run. Rhode Island natives Joseph Nappa (Warwick), Matthew Coffey (Barrington), Nate Silva (Warwick), and Matthew DeSisto (Barrington) round out the Hawk roster.
BIG PLAYS SET UP WIN OVER SAINT ANSELM: The Bulldogs used a couple of big plays last week against the Hawks of Saint Anselm. Leading 7-0 after one quarter, Charles Granatell found receiver Vincent Norris down the middle for a 63-yard touchdown to make it 13-0 early in the second. It was the longest pass play this season for the Bulldogs. Leading 20-0 at the half, Bryant sophomore Jon Zenquis (Northbridge, MA) took the opening kickoff of the second half and returned it 91-yards for a touchdown. It was the only points scored in the half, but the return tied the school record for longest kickoff return in a game shared by two other Bulldog players (Willis Cooper and Robert Graham).
LOOKING BACK AT PERRY'S DAY VS. STONEHILL: Several new records were etched into the Bryant record book two weeks ago as the Bulldogs rallied from a 12-0 deficit in the third quarter to defeat Stonehill, 24-12 on a soggy afternoon at Bulldog Stadium. Highlighting the afternoon was the play of junior Lorenzo Perry. Perry rushed for a school record 313 yards and had two touchdowns on the day. His rushing yards were the fourth-best single-game total in Northeast-10 Conference history. He was named the co-Player of the Week in the Northeast-10 Conference with the New England Gold Helmet going to Bentley freshman Jon White who threw five TDs in the fourth quarter in a loss to C.W. Post.
Other notables from the Stonehill Game:
* Perry broke Austin Martin¹s 1999 record of 251 yards rushing with 313
* Perry¹s 340 total yards were also a school record
* His 42 offensive plays were fourth-most in school history
* Bryant set a school record with 524 total yards of offense
* Bryant had the ball for 10 minutes, 40 seconds in the fourth quarter
HAND IT TO THE BIG GUYS UP FRONT: Bryant has allowed the fewest number of sacks this season in the conference. The Bulldogs have surrendered just 5 sacks for 32 yards while the Bulldog defense have chalked up 17 sacks for a loss of 108 yards.
