BOSTON -  (9/6/06) Bryant University football running back Lorenzo Perry (Providence, RI) was named the Boston Globe Gold Helmet award winner for his outstanding play in leading the Bulldogs to a 49-20 win over Southern Connecticut last Saturday.   Perry received the award Wednesday afternoon at Harvard's Dillon Field House as part of the New England Football Writers' Luncheon that takes place each week throughout the college football season.  The Gold Helmet is presented to Division I-AA, Division II and Division III players for their outstanding contributions to his team on a given week.

Perry, who was named All-New England last December by the New England Football Writers, rushed for 190 yards  (no yardage lost) on 33 carries and had a school record four touchdowns in the win over the Owls.  A graduate of La Salle Academy in Providence and transfer from UMass Amherst, Perry now has 1,525 yards rushing cover two seasons at Bryant.

He becomes the first Bryant football player in school history to receive the Gold Helmet Award.

On Tuesday, Perry was named the Northeast-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week.  He enters Saturday's game at American International College (1 pm) with 20 career rushing touchdowns needing only one rushing touchdown to become the all-time career leader.

Saturday's game can be heard and seen live online at www.bryantbulldogs.com
