SOUTH EASTON, Mass. - The Bryant University football team captured the 2007 Northeast-10 Conference Championship and as a result were rewarded with nine players named all-conference and garnering two major awards. Fourth-year coach Marty Fine was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Bulldogs to an 8-2 overall record and second consecutive berth in the NCAA playoffs. Senior quarterback Charlie Granatell (Franklin Lakes, NJ) was named Second Team All-Conference and was voted by the league coaches as the Offensive Player of the Year for 2007.
Granatell has enjoyed another tremendous season. After finishing second in the nation in passing efficiency in 2006, Granatell has completed 148 of 243 (60.9 percent) passes this year for 1,789 yards and has throw 13 touchdowns. Starting in all 40 games since coming to Bryant in 2004, Granatell holds all of Bryant's passing records including 6,816 yards and 56 career passing touchdowns.
Earning first team all-conference this year were sophomore running back Lindsey Gamble (Boston, Mass.), senior offensive lineman Ralph Squitieri (Orangeburg, NY), sophomore linebacker Paul Polomski (Franklin, Mass.), senior defensive back Marcus Lindsey (Bridgeport, Conn.), and junior punter Brian Donnelly (East Dennis, Mass.).
Gamble has filled in nicely for the graduated Lorenzo Perry, last year's NE-10 Player of the Year. He leads the team with 85.8 yards rushing per game and has 13 rushing touchdowns. Donnelly is averaging 38.1 yard per punt with a long of 57 this year. Defensively, Polomski and Lindsey have been solid all season. Polomski has 53 tackles and two interceptions while Lindsey leads the team with 70 tackles on the season.
Earning second team all-conference for the Bulldogs in 2007 include: Granatell, junior offensive lineman Jacob Meyers (Brooks, Ga.), senior defensive back Chris Wohlheter (Newark, Ohio), and senior defensive lineman Jay Stahl (Methuen, Mass.).
Wohlheter, who is second on the team behind Lindsey with 67 tackles and has two interceptions, is one of the top punt returners in the league this season with an average of 14.7 yards per return. Stahl has 45 tackles and a team best 10 tackles for a loss including five sacks.
The Bulldogs (8-2) travel to Southern Connecticut (8-3) this Saturday for a first round NCAA playoff game at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn. Kickoff is at noon. The game will be carried l
