Wagstaff to play in FCS Senior Scout Bowl

Wagstaff to compete in the FCS Senior Scout Bowl on Dec. 17

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior defensive back Samad Wagstaff (New Rochelle, N.Y.) will close out a stellar collegiate career this Saturday, Dec. 17, as he represents the Bryant University football team in the 2011 FCS Senior Scout Bowl presented by the Collegiate Development Football League (CDFL) in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

A 2010 Second Team All-Northeast Conference selection, Wagstaff is one of 83 seniors from FCS schools that will play in the game. The two teams are divided up into North and South, Wagstaff being a member of the North team. He is joined on the team by nine other players from NEC schools.

Blessed with great speed instincts, Wagstaff quickly became one of the best defensive backs in school history. He exploded onto the scene his freshman season, intercepting five passes and breaking up 10 others. He followed that with two interceptions in his sophomore campaign and then soared to new heights as a junior. On his way to all-conference honors, Wagstaff intercepted four passes and returned three of them for touchdowns, a new school record. His 90-yard interception return for a touchdown vs. Robert Morris on Nov. 10, 2010 helped the Black and Gold upset the 25th-ranked Colonials in Smithfield.

Wagstaff closed out his career with another strong season for the Bulldogs in 2011. The highlight of the season came on Oct. 8, vs. Stonehill at Bulldog Stadium. With 4:11 remaining in the first quarter, Wagstaff picked off a pass in his own end zone, setting a program record with his 12th-career interception.

Over four years, Wagstaff collected 97 tackles, broke up 28 passes and intercepted 12 passes. He leaves Smithfield as the program leader in interceptions (12) and interception returns for a touchdown in a season and in a career (3). He also becomes the second Bulldog in the last two years to play in the Scout Bowl. Last year, linebacker Jason Riffe played for the North and collected four tackles and an interception.

Saturday's game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff at Doug Shaw Stadium. Rosters and broadcast information can be found by clicking here.
