SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The sixth-ranked Bryant University
field hockey team scored two second half goals to remain undefeated
in conference play as the Bulldogs held off American International,
3-2 Thursday night. Bryant improves to 7-2 overall and
remains in first place in the NE-10 at 7-0 while AIC drops to 2-6
(2-6 NE-10).
After moving up from No. 10 to No. 6 in the national polls thanks to last Saturday's win over second-ranked Stonehill, the Bulldogs got on the board early as Courtney O'Brien (Tewksbury, Mass.) put a shot on the Yellow Jacket goal nine minutes in which was initially saved by AIC goalie Cindy Armand. But the rebound came back to O'Brien who was able to redirect it into the goal to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. It was the senior's third goal of the season.
Jamie Anderson would tie the game at 1-1 with a goal 15 minutes later, sending both teams to the locker room even at the break.
In the second half, Bryant's Shana Libman (Attleboro, Mass.) wasted little time in putting the Bulldogs back on top as the senior scored an unassisted tally just 35 seconds into the second half to make it 2-1 Bryant. Just over a minute later, Bryant's Caroline Carr (Wrentham, Mass.) made it 3-1 with a goal at the 37:44 mark of the game, taking a pass from Jessica Maxwell and blasting a shot past Armand from 10 yards out. It was Carr's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
AIC would cut the lead to 3-2 on Anderson's second goal of the night in the 45th minute, but the Bulldogs would hold on from there to remain undefeated in league play. Sophomore goalie Kundayi Mawema (Zimbabwe) made two saves on the night as Bryant out-shot the Yellow Jackets 11 to 7 in the game.
The Bulldogs travel to Bentley Saturday for a Northeast-10 Conference game starting at noon.
