BRYANT TABBED EIGHTH IN NORTHEAST CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- After one full year of Division I play in 2008, the Bryant University field hockey team returns to the field in 2009 to face a full slate of Northeast Conference opponents and were picked to finish eighth in the league as voted on by conference coaches. The poll was announced Thursday afternoon by league officials.

This season marks the first for Shaunessy Saucier as a head coach, and she brings in a freshman class that is poised to make an immediate impact to compliment a solid core of returners from last season.

Bryant will play a full conference schedule in 2009 including seven home games in its second year of transition to DI competition, after taking on five NEC opponents in 2008. The Bulldogs notched their first Division I win in a 3-1 road victory over Siena in the regular-season finale.

Lock Haven was selected as the favorite entering the 2009 season, followed by Rider, Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart. Saint Francis (PA) rounds out the top five, while Monmouth and Robert Morris were picked just ahead of Bryant in the sixth and seventh slots, respectively. Siena, Bryant's only NEC win in 2008, rounds out the preseason standings in ninth.

The Bulldogs open up Year Two of their Division I transition Sunday, Aug. 30 against the University of Maine (1 p.m.) and opens the home portion of their 2009 schedule on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. when they host Lehigh University.
