Bulldogs Host Bentley Thursday Night

Dropping three of its previous four games, the Bryant men’s basketball team has put together a five-game win streak heading into Thursday’s showdown with Bentley College (12-2, 6-0 NE-10). This will be the first of two meetings between Bryant and Bentley with the two teams scheduled to meet again Feb. 19 in Waltham, Mass. Bryant is coming off a 90-62 win at Assumption College on Monday night while Bentley, winners of nine-straight, is coming off a 77-67 win over Rollins College last Thursday in Florida.
BALANCED ATTACK LEADS BRYANT PAST ASSUMPTION MONDAY
Bryant shot 48.7 percent and made 10 of 22 three-point field goals in a 90-62 win over Assumption on Monday night. Junior guard John Williams had 23 points - including five 3-pointers and was 9-for-16 from the floor as five players reached double figures in the game. Mario Correia had 18 on 8-of-15 shooting. Bryant trailed 2-0 and 6-5 in the early going, but three-pointers by John Williams and Correia put Bryant ahead 12-6 and the Bulldogs never looked back. Leading 45-35 at the half, Bryant used a 27-6 run midway through the second half to put the game away. Bryant had 21 offensive rebounds in the game with Cullen McCarthy snaring four as the senior finished with 6 rebounds total.
LOOKING AT THE FALCONS OF BENTLEY
Under the direction of 14th-year coach Jay Lawson, Bentley comes into the Chace Athletic Center with a 12-2 overall record and undefeated in Northeast-10 play at 6-0. Saint Rose is the only other conference team undefeated in league play (8-0). Tim Forbes of Attleboro, Mass. leads the Falcons with 18.6 points per game this season and has made 44 of 98 three-point attempts this year. Forbes is shooting 42.9 percent from the floor and is an 86.8 percent free throw shooter. Sean Cooke is next with 12.1 ppg and has 26 three’s this year. As a team, Bentley has made 138 from long range and averaging 80.4 ppg. Opponents haven’t fared quite as well as the Falcons are allowing just 69.1 points per game. Bentley was picked to finish first in the conference in the preseason coaches poll.
UP NEXT
Following Thursday’s game, the Bulldogs will travel to Stonehill this Saturday for a rematch with the Chieftains (3:30 p.m.). Stonehill handed Bryant a 71-65 loss in Smithfield back on Dec. 12. The Bulldogs will host Merrimack on Tuesday and Assumption next Saturday at the Chace Athletic Center.
ARE WE IN THE NINETIES ?
Bryant has scored at least 90 points in three of its last four games - including its last two. The Bulldogs put up a season-best 99 points on Bloomfield last Thursday and had 90 at Assumption Monday night.
BIG MILESTONE FOR BIG MIKE
Senior Mike Williams became the 28th player in Bryant school history to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career Dec. 20 in the team’s win at Holy Family in Philadelphia. Williams had 21 points in the game and reached the milestone by converting a free throw after scoring a basket inside and was fouled with 8:48 left in the first half. Williams, the owner of Bryant’s school career blocks (242) and single season blocks (90) records, has 796 career rebounds (3rd all-time). Williams needs 73 rebounds to pass former teammate Jason Noel (868) for second. Ernie DeWitt’s is the all-time rebound leader with 1,036.
BURNS IS BACK
Sophomore Chris Burns has made a strong return to the lineup after suffering a facial injury in the opener against AIC. Burns, wearing a protective mask, scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench Monday at Assumption. Burns was named the NE-10 Freshman of the Year last season.
SUPER MARIO
Senior Mario Correia of Brockton, Mass. and Ivory Coast, West Africa, has been playing well as of late. Scoring 24 points against Bloomfield last week, Correia shot 8-of-15 from the floor to finish with 18 points and grabbed five rebounds in the team’s 90-62 win over Assumption. For his efforts last week, Correia earned Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll distinction.
BULLDOG BITES
Bryant is coming off back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1982 ... Thursday game vs Bentley will be the 99th game coached by Max Good at Bryant. It will also be Good’s 346th as a head coach in 13 seasons ... After posting a 12-3 record at home last season, the Bulldogs are 4-2 this year at the Chace Athletic Center.
