This Week's Notes (pdf)

QUICKLY

Bryant visits American International College Monday evening for a Northeast-10 Conference game with the Yellow Jackets. The Bulldogs (8-6, 4-6 NE-10) snapped a three-game skid with a convincing 91-70 win over Assumption Saturday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Center. AIC (7-7, 3-6 NE-10) was idle on Saturday and return to action for the first time in nearly a week after falling to Bentley College 76-61 in Springfield on Tuesday night. Bryant defeated AIC 78-67 in the season-opener back on November 23 in Smithfield, R.I. John Williams had 18 points - including six game-sealing free throws in the final minutes - to pace the Bulldogs to the win.

Mike Williams

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BULLDOGS

Mike Williams scored 17 points and tied a career-high with five assists to help lead the Bryant men's basketball team to a 91-70 win over Assumption College Saturday.

Bryant led 48-39 at the half and opened the second half outscoring the visitors 11 to 4 to take a commanding, 61-43 lead with 16:03 left, and never looked back. Mike Williams had one of his best games this season for the Bulldogs as the senior made six of seven from the floor to go with seven rebounds, three steals, and pair of blocks in 31 minutes. More importantly, Williams held Assumption senior center Brian Robinson to just four points in 12 minutes. Robinson entered the game averaging 17.6 ppg this season.

SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS

AIC is led by John Huggins who is scoring 17.1 ppg this season while teammate Cortez Sutton is next with 11.2 ppg and 8.3 rebounds per game. The Yellow Jackets are averaging 69.1 ppg as a team and shoot well from the outside, making 85 three-point field goals with five players recording at least 10 three’s this season (Huggins has 24). AIC earned an impressive 81-73 win at Merrimack on Jan. 8.

BIG MIKE CHASES CLIMBING THE GLASS AND THE RECORD BOOK

Senior Mike Williams became the 28th player in Bryant school history to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career Dec. 20, 2004 in the team’s win at Holy Family in Philadelphia. Williams, the owner of Bryant’s school career blocks (250) and single season blocks (90) records, has 821 career rebounds (3rd all-time). Williams needs 48 rebounds to pass former teammate Jason Noel (868) for second. Ernie DeWitt’s is the all-time rebound leader with 1,036. Williams had a solid game vs. Assumption on Jan. 15 with a career-tying five assists, not to mention seven boards, 2 blocks, 3 steals, 6-for-7 shooting from the floor in 31 minutes. Williams held Assumption’s Brian Robinson (17.4 ppg) to just four points in the game.

LONG-RANGE SPECIALTY

Junior John Williams lead the Northeast-10 with 3.62 three-point field goals made per game this year AND 3-point FG percentage at 48.5 percent entering the week. Williams has made 47 of 97 from beyond the arc this year. He had 67 three’s as a freshman. The school record for three’s in a season is 87 by Romuald Augustin last year.

LAST MEETING WITH AIC

John Williams made six consecutive free throws in the final minutes to help lead the Bulldogs to a 78-67 win over AIC in the season-opener at the Chace Athletic Center back on Nov. 23. Bryant led by three at the half (38-35) and led 60-48 with 10 minutes left in the game but AIC would close to within 70-67 before a Mike Williams turnaround jumper in the lane helped keep the Bulldogs safely in front. Williams was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field in the game. Chris Burns suffered an injured cheekbone in the game and would miss the next six games.

BULLDOG BITES

Bryant is coming off back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1982 ... Monday’s game with AIC will be the 103rd game coached by Max Good at Bryant. It will also be Good’s 350th as a head coach in 13 seasons ... After posting a 12-3 record at home last season, the Bulldogs are 5-4 this year at the Chace Athletic Center ... The Bentley loss was just the second time Bryant has dropped a game when leading at the half (7-2) ... Bryant has just four home games remaining (eight road games including Monday’s game at AIC).
