Adelphi University is making its 10th trip to the NCAA tournament in the past 11 years this weekend when the Panthers take on the Bulldogs in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Northeast Regional in Waltham, Mass. Tipoff on Saturday is at 12 noon at Bentley's Dana Center.
This will be the first meeting between the Panthers and Bulldogs though both teams have enjoyed recent success in the NCAA tournament. Bryant reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen last year and fell a point shy at the buzzer from earning a trip to the Elite Eight. Adelphi did not reach the tournament last year but advance to the Elite Eight in 2002.
This year, the Panthers enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed after winning the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title. In the conference tournament, the Panthers came up short, falling at home to eighth-seed New Haven in the first round.
Under third-year coach James Cosgrove, the Panthers have relied on its defense to carry the way in 2004-05. While ranking near the bottom nationally with only 64.0 points per game, the Panthers lead the nation in points allowed (55.0) and field goal percentage defense (37.6 percent).
Three players are averaging double figures for Adelphi this season, led by sophomore Kimani Blaize at 12.1 points per game while Jesse Samuels and Eric Martin are averaging 11.6 and 11.1 respectively. Blaize was an all-conference selection this season as the six-foot sophomore guard has made 67 three's this eason and led the team with 50 steals.
Martin, a junior, and sophomore Mike Mosby (4.0 ppg) are the tallest players on the roster at 6-foot-6. Martin leads the team with 5.9 rebounds a game while 6-foot-4 Samuels is next at 5.7 rpg.
Bryant and Adelphi have played just three common opponents this season in UMass Lowell, Bentley, and Merrimack. Adelphi fell to both UMass Lowell (61-54) and Merrimack (56-55) while registering a solid 71-68 win over Bentley back on Nov. 20. Bryant was swept by Bentley this season while splitting a pair of games with Merrimack and defeating UMass Lowell 57-52.
Cosgrove was named the NYCAC Coach of the Year for 2004-05. He is in his third-year at Adelphi and eighth year overall with a record of 105-61. Prior to arriving at Adelphi, Cosgrove spent five years as the head basketball coach at Endicott College in Beverly, Mass.
