MEN'S UPDATE:
The Bryant University (9-5, 4-5 NE-10) men's basketball
team looks to snap a two-game losing skid Saturday afternoon when
the Bulldogs travel up the road to face Assumption (3-12, 1-9
NE-10) … This will be the second meeting of the season as
Bryant needed overtime to knock off the Greyhounds, 94-88 back on
Jan. 2 at the Chace Athletic Center … Senior guard John
Williams (Springfield, MA) had 24 points including six 3-pointers
in the win for Bryant … Williams leads the Bulldogs in
scoring this season with 18.2 ppg and has 44 assists. He is a
nominee for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award …
Bryant is coming off a 73-57 loss at Merrimack College on Tuesday
night … The Bulldogs will host American International on
Monday night and Saint Rose next Saturday for Hall of Fame Weekend
at Bryant.
BULLDOG NOTABLES ….
- Bryant set a school record with 25 wins last year, becoming the first Northeast-10 Conference team to reach the NCAA Championship game (Bryant fell to Virginia Union, 63-58).
- Bryant outscored it's two opponents at the Comfort Suites tourney, 213-149. In addition, the Bulldogs made 22 three's in both games, allowing just six; Had 29 steals to opponents 9.
- The Bulldogs are 3-4 on the road this season, 5-1 at home, and 1-0 on neutral courts
- Bryant leads the conference with a .401 three-point field goal percentage and second with 9.02 three-point field goals per game.
- John Williams has 249 career three-pointers and needs 47 to break the school record of 295 held by Jason Bennett.
Sophomore guard Jon Ezeokoli (South Orange, NJ) scored 13 points but it was not enough as the Bryant men’s basketball team fell to Merrimack College, 73-57 Tuesday night. The Bulldogs drops to 9-5 on the season with the loss and 4-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Merrimack improved to 8-6 overall (6-3 NE-10). The Bulldogs trailed Merrimack, 37-26 at the half and shot just 38.6 percent from the floor, including 20 percent from three-point range. Nate Sudlow (Brooklyn, NY) had 11 points while freshman Nick Pontes had 10 as the Merrimack defense held Bryant leading scorer John Williams (18.9 ppg) to just nine points in the game. Merrimack, behind 20 points from Kenny Jones, shot 41.4 percent from the floor in the game and made 18 of 19 free throws.
GOOD AND THE BULLDOGS HONORED BY R.I. SPORTWRITERS
Words Unlimited, the statewide organization of sports
writers, sportscasters, and publicists announced in early January
that Max Good has been named the 2005 Male Coach of the Year and
the 2004-05 men's basketball team's drive to the NCAA National
Champion as the Story of the Year. Good and the team will be
honored along with the other winners at the organization's 60th
annual Sports Awards Banquet on Sunday, Feb. 19.
SCORING AT ALL LEVELS:
This season, Bryant has seen its point total range from
highs (over 100 twice) and lows (51 pts vs. Stonehill). The
Bulldogs have scored in the 50's twice, 60's four times, 70's three
times, 80's once, 90's twice, and over 100 twice. The 111
points vs. 12th-ranked Holy Family on Dec. 29 was the most for
Bryant under coach Max Good in five seasons, and the 5th-best in
school history. Bryant scored 102 points the night before
against Bloomfield, marking the first time Bryant has gone over the
century mark in back-to-back games since the 1976-77 season.
THREE OF KIND FROM THREE:
The Bulldogs have found success from the outside this
season, with John Williams, Chris Burns, and Jon Ezeokoli
accounting for 99 of Bryant's 122 three-pointers. Williams
leads the Bulldogs with 41 treys while Burns and Ezeokoli aren't
too far behind with 29 each. Ezeokoli is currently leading
the conference with a .551 three-point field goal percentage.
WILLIAMS AGAIN PACING BRYANT OFFENSE:
Senior guard John Williams has continued his strong
shooting in leading the Bulldogs in scoring this season. The
Springfield, MA native was a first team all-conference selection
last season and earned MVP honors of the NCAA Regional
Championship. In addition, he was named all-region after setting a
school record with 119 three's on the year. Invited to the
prestigious Portsmouth Basketball Camp in Virginia, Williams is
currently 11th all-time at Bryant with 1,372 career points and
second 248 career three's. This season, he has been named
NE-10 Player of the Week once (Nov. 21) and to the NE-10 Honor Roll
twice (Dec. 5, Jan. 9)

PLAYER NOTABLES:
* Junior guard Chris Burns
(Merrimack,
NH) is currently third on the
team in scoring and has made 29 three-pointers this season. The CBS
Chevrolet Player of the Game in the NCAA Championship game last
year has been one of the team's top perimeter defenders as
well. Against Bentley on Jan. 5, Burns held high-scoring Sean
Cooke to just 5 points on 2 of 7 shooting.
* Freshman Nick Pontes (New Bedford, MA) averaged 12.7 ppg and 5.7 rebounds per game in leading Bryant to three wins during the holiday, earning him Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Week honors. The freshman scored a career-high 18 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the floor, and grabbed five rebounds in Bryant’s win over Bloomfield and followed with 10 points and nine rebounds in Bryant’s win over Holy Family. He tallied 10 points and two blocks in the team’s win over Assumption and followed with 16 points, 6 rebounds vs. Bentley last Thursday.
