BRYANT BASKETBALL TAKES ON BC WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT CONTE FORUM; GAME BROADCAST ON WOON 1240AM
UPDATE
The Bryant University men's basketball team hits the road
Wednesday night to travel to Boston College to battle the Eagles at
Conte Forum. Tipoff is at 7 pm ET. Bryant is coming off
a 59-48 loss at home to Army on Monday night. The Bulldogs will be
looking to snap a four-game losing skid since earning a 59-50 win
over Quinnipiac on Nov. 22. The Bulldogs will have 10 days
off in between games before heading to Rutgers on Dec. 20. This is
the first of five straight road games for the Bulldogs before
returning home to play Yale on Jan. 2. The Eagles have won three
straight games since falling to Purdue back on November 26, 71-64,
with wins over Iowa, UAB, and UMass. On Saturday, BC
knocked-off the Minutemen in a clash of in-state rivals in an
overtime thriller, 85-81.
THE BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES
The Boston College Eagles will host the Bulldogs tonight
at Conte Forum at 7:00 pm. This will be the first meeting all time
between the two programs. The Eagles are coming off a thrilling
85-81 overtime win over UMass on Saturday at the Mullins Center. BC
is led by preseason All-ACC first team selection Tyrese Rice who is
averaging 18.1 points per game. Rice came up big with 21 points
against the Minuteman with six coming in overtime. Sophomores Corey
Raji, Rakim Sanders and Joe Trapani each contributed 16 points as
part of a very balanced Eagle attack. Boston College has stayed
balanced all year, with four players averaging double-figures.
Trapani also grabbed 12 rebounds, putting up his first
double-double of the season. He leads the team in rebounding with
6.8 per game.
BULLDOGS COME UP SHORT AGAINST ARMY
Returning home from a five game road trip, the Bulldogs
fell to Army, 59-48, Monday night at the Chace Center. Cecil
Gresham had a game-high 14 points while connecting on four three's
and grabbing a season-high seven rebounds. Senior guard Pete
Lambert had a season-high 11 points in 22 minutes. Army shot 50
percent from the floor for the game while holding Bryant to 40
percent.
BRYANT-BC CONNECTIONS
Bulldog head coach Tim O'Shea played his college
basketball at Boston College where he was a point guard from
1980-1984. O'Shea won two Big East regular-season titles and earned
four postseason tournament berths during his career. In his four
years, BC advanced twice to the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16 and once
to the Elite Eight. O'Shea also served nine years as an assistant
coach at URI under current BC head coach Al Skinner. In 1997,
O'Shea returned to his alma mater with Skinner for four seasons
with the Eagles before earning the head coaching job at Ohio
University. Bryant assistant coach Dwayne Pina also played four
years of basketball at Boston College from 1997-2001 for Al Skinner
with O'Shea as the assistant. Pina played 78 career games, starting
in 38 while ranking seventh in the Big East, averaging 4.5 assists
per game in the 1998-99 season. The Eagles won the Big East
regular-season and tournament championships in 2000-2001, Pina's
senior season, while going 27-5 and earning a three seed in the
NCAA tournament.
STIFLING DEFENSE
Over the past three games, the Bulldogs have held
opponents to an average of just 59.0 points per game, with only
Iowa breaking the 60-point barrier. Bryant also held Qunnipiac to
50 points earlier this season in the squad's lone victory.
GRESHAM SHOWS HOT HAND
Junior forward Cecil Gresham (Bloomfield, Conn. /
MCI) averaged 21.7 points per game over a three game span
while going 15-25 from three-point range (60 percent) against
Columbia, Quinnipiac and UConn. He has recorded double figures in
five of the team's first seven contests. The junior grabbed
All-Tournament accolades at the Columbia Classic for his 23 points
per game effort. Gresham bounced back against Army after Albany and
Iowa were able to slow him down in two straight contests, holding
him to 0-for-7 from behind the arc and 5-for-22 from the field
while averaging just six points. He scored a game-high 14 points
while knocking down four three's while grabbing a season-best seven
rebounds.
BULLDOGS EARN FIRST DIVISION I WIN
With a 59-50 win over Quinnipiac in the consolation game
of the Columbia Classic, Bryant grabbed its first Division I men's
basketball win in the history of the program.
