Mike Kelly spent the last four years as an assistant coach
at James Madison University of the Colonial Athletic Conference
under head coach Dean Keener. Prior to that, Kelly spent
three seasons as Rhode Island College's head men's basketball coach
from 2001-04. He also served as RIC's coordinator of intramurals.
He led RIC to a 25-52 mark during that time span.
Kelly led Rhode Island College to an 11-15 overall record and a 7-7
(fifth place) mark in the Little East Conference in 2003-04. His
03-04 freshman class formed the foundation for RIC's run to the
NCAA Elite Eight three years later in 2006-07. The 2003-04 freshman
class included 1,000-point and All-Conference guard Kinsey Durgin
and Kamari Williams.
He led the Anchormen to an unbelievable turnaround in 2002-03,
taking a program that posted a 1-24 record in '01-02 and improving
it by 12 wins to finish the campaign with a 13-13 mark, the best
improvement in all of New England.
Kelly was previously an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at
Davidson College since August of 1999. During his two-year
stint with the Wildcats, Kelly was responsible for practice and
game coaching, scouting of opponents, individual workouts, strength
& conditioning and he coordinated the film exchange program. He
assisted in the monitoring of academics and was responsible for all
basketball travel and team functions. In addition, he served as the
camp director for the Bob McKillop Basketball Camp.
Prior to taking the Davidson job, Kelly was an Assistant Men's
Basketball Coach at Virginia Tech University from August of 1996
through July of 1999. His duties included coordinating recruiting,
monitoring the team's academic progress, assisting in scouting and
game preparation and the coordination of the film exchange and
editing program.
Kelly began his coaching career in July 1993 at the U.S.
Merchant Marine Academy as an assistant men's basketball coach, a
position he held until July of 1996. He was responsible for game
and practice coaching, as well as recruiting and scouting. During
his tenure at the USMMA, he also served as an admissions assistant
and was the assistant equipment and facilities manager.
Kelly is an experienced basketball camp clinician and speaker. His
basketball travels included stops in Europe. He has coached and
conducted camps in several countries including Ireland, Belgium,
Italy and France.
As an undergraduate, Kelly was a point guard on the men's
basketball team while at St. Joseph's College (ME). He led the team
to a district championship and a berth in the NAIA National
Tournament in both 1992 and 1993. He earned a bachelor's degree in
business administration in 1993.
Kelly hails from Yarmouth, Massachusetts and is a 1989 graduate of
Dennis-Yarmouth High School.
He and his wife, Jill, currently reside in Smithfield, RI with their son, Ryan (5), and daughter, Regan (3).
