BRYANT MEN'S GOLF TEAM WINS NEW
ENGLAND DIVISION II CHAMPIONSHIP
Bulldogs Place Third Overall For All
Divisions
Brewster, Mass -- The Bryant University men's golf team captured another Division II New England Championship Tuesday at the 73rd annual New England Championship at the Captain's Course in Brewster, Mass.
The Bulldogs finished with 614 points, finishing behind only the University of Rhode Island which placed first with 600 points and the University of Connecticut which finished as the runner up with 608. Scott Congdon (Foxboro, Mass.) and Jason Thresher placed tied for eighth overall individually with a two-round score of 151. Mike Philipp was next at 154 to place tied for 23rd overall. Dan Peck and Nick Caccia rounded out the scoring as the pair finished tied for 63rd at 159.
The event attracted 212 golfers to The Captains Golf Course and its 36-hole layout on Cape Cod. NEIGA was pleased to have Cleveland Golf Company return as the ‘Presenting Sponsor". The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) has been in existence since 1934 and includes 48 member colleges and universities in New England and is considered to be the oldest and largest college golf tournament. It is unique in that Divisions I, II and III compete together.
Brian Cawley of Salem State College was the medallist with a total score of 144 (even par) over the two-day 36-hole tournament. The University of Rhode Island (Div. I) , under the leadership of Coach Tom Drennan, won the tournament with a two-day score of 600. It is the 10th time in the last 11 years the Rams have taken home the NEIGA Title. Division II winners were Bryant University finishing with a score of 614. Salem State College led the Division III teams with a total of 619. At banquet held on Sunday evening at The Irish Village Restaurant, the following awards were presented.
