debut at the Northeast Conference Championship tournament over the weekend, finishing with a three-day, 54-hole total of 896 that would have placed the team in second place if they were eligible for team competition. Since the school is in the process of reclassifying into Division I, the Bulldogs were allowed to compete on an individual level, and turned a lot of heads in the process.
Bryant proved to be one of the best teams in the NEC this year, shooting a 299 on Sunday to finish up behind Sacred Heart for the overall team title. Once again it was Jason Thresher (West Suffield, Conn.) leading the squad, shooting a two-under par, 214, for the tournament to finish in second place individually. The Bulldog award recipient for the golf team this season was just two-strokes behind Eric Hawerchak from Central Connecticut for the individual championship.
It was not all just Thresher, as the Bulldogs got a great overall team effort on their way to the second place finish. Scott Congdon (Foxboro, Mass.) shot an even par 72 on Sunday, placing him eighth overall for the tournament as Bryant had three players finish in the top-20. Mike Pyne (Foxboro, Mass.) tied for 18th overall, shooting a 79 on Sunday to finish with a three-day total of 230.
Kyle Hoffman (Pawtucket, R.I.) rounded out the scoring with an 82 on Sunday, finishing the tournament with a 237. Alex Daley (Hudson, Mass.) also competed, shooting a 239 for the weekend, helping the Bulldogs on Sunday with a final round of 78.
The tournament was the final one for the golf team this season, finishing up a very successful inaugural Division I campaign. The team finished in the top-three in eight different tournaments, including capturing two tournament titles at the Dartmouth Invitational and NEIGA Championships.
