BRYANT'S O'CONNELL AND CONGDON ADVANCE TO THE QUARTERFINALS OF STATE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS
SMITHFIELD, RI - Former Bryant University men's golfer Jim O'Connell (Troy, NY) has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 104th Rhode Island Amateur Golf Championship at Crestwood Country Club following a win dramatic playoff win over Andrew Fiorenzano of Carnegie Abbey Club Wednesday.
O'Connell, who was a standout player for the Bulldogs from 2003-2006 and currently serves as an assistant coach for long-time Bryant coach Archie Boulet, birdied the 18th hole to pull even with Fiorenzano. After both players parred the first playoff hole, O'Connell recorded a par on the second playoff hole and captured the match when Fiorenzano finished with a bogey-five.
O'Connell, who plays out of Pawtucket Country Club, will face Potowomut's Bobby Leopold in the quarterfinals Thursday at 8:08 a.m.
Current Bulldog Kyle Hoffman (Pawtucket, RI), also of Pawtucket CC fell to Matt Broome in the round of 32 Wednesday.
At the Mass. State Amateur at The Brookline Country Club, Bryant senior standout Scott Congdon (Foxboro, MA) also qualified for the quarterfinals Wednesday bvy earning a win over Greg Shuman of The Country Club (1-up) thanks to five birdies - including four on the front nine in the round of 32. Congdon, who plays out of Foxboro Country Club, will face Antonio Grillo of Farm Neck GC Thursday at 8:27 a.m.
