CONGDON REACHES STATE SEMIFINALS; O'CONNELL COMES UP SHORT

SMITHFIELD, RI - Bryant University senior golf standout Scott Congdon (Foxboro, MA) defeated Antonio Grillo of Farm Neck GC Thursday morning in the quarterfinals of the 101st Massachusetts Amateur Championship at The Country Club in Brookline, MA.
Congdon won by a score of 3 to 1 and now advanced to the state semifinals where he fell to Frank Vana Jr. of Marlborough CC, 3 and 1.
Congdon, who plays out of Foxboro Country Club, rebounded nicely after three posting three consecutive bogeys through the first five holes during the quarterfinal match. With the match all square heading after the 13th hole, Congdon birdied the 534-yard 14th hole and went 2-up after Grillo bogeyed the 16th and closed out the win with a birdie on the 17th.
Against Vana in the semis, Congdon was all square with Vana through four but could only manage three birdies in fall 3 to 1.
At the Rhode Island Amateur, former Bryant player and current assistant coach Jim O'Connell ‘06 (Troy, NY) came up just short in the quarterfinal round of the 104th Rhode Island Amateur Golf Championship at Crestwood Country Club Thursday. O'Connell was 4-up against Bobby Leopold of Potowomut GC after opening bogey-free through eleven holes including birdies on the first and fifth.
But Leopold roared back with birdies on the 12th and 14th to pull event following the 15th and birdied the 16th to go 1-up and held on from there.
