THRESHER FINISHES SEVENTH OVERALL IN ADAMS CUP, LEADS BRYANT TO 12TH-PLACE TEAM FINISH

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Led by the solid and consistent play of senior Jason Thresher (West Suffield, Conn.), who finished seventh overall at the Adams Cup of Newport, the Bryant University golf team placed 12th of 17 teams in the two-day, three-round tournament held Monday and Tuesday in Newport, R.I.

Thresher was the top finisher for the Bulldogs at the 54-hole Adams Cup, and the senior shot for par on the first and third rounds (72) to edge his way into the tournament's top 10. Thresher shot a 74 in the middle round for a 218 on the tournament, just two over par and 11 shots behind the eventual winner.

Senior Scott Congdon (Foxboro, Mass.) shot a 78 in the final round of action Tuesday to finish tied for 50th overall, while Erik Tankanow (Worcester, Mass.)'s 73 round three brought the junior back to tied for 59th with a two-day score of 234 (80; 81; 73).

Kyle Hoffman (Pawtucket, R.I.) finished the day knotted for 76th, while Mike Pyne (Foxboro, Mass.) came in at No. 79.

The Bulldogs as a team had their best round of the tournament Tuesday to move up two spots and finish at No. 12, shooting a combined 917 (307; 310; 300).

There were 17 teams and 89 individual golfers making up the 2009 Adams Cup field, with UConn's Jeb Buchanan (207) taking the top overall individual spot. Buchanan shot nine under, with a 69 on all three rounds of play. Southern Methodist took first place as a team, placing three golfers in the individual top-10 and shooting an 876 as a whole.

Bryant returns to the course to open October at the MacDonald's Cup, hosted by Yale University on October 2-4.
