SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Senior Spencer Sweitzer (Lunenburg, Mass.) shot a 74 in the first round of the Hartford Hawk Invitational Monday to lead the Bryant University golf team, as the Bulldogs sit 11th in the 17-team field for the three-round tournament entering the final day of play.
Sweitzer's two-over-par frame left him tied for 19th overall, and sophomore Samuel Russell (Southborough, Mass.) recorded a 76 for a knot at the 40th spot. Walk-on newcomer Brendan Allen (Chelmsford, Mass.) needed just one more stroke to catch up with his teammates and enters the second round in a tie for 45th overall. Senior Grant Certuse (Mansfield, Mass.) and rookie Conor McGovern (South Darien, Conn.) followed up, carding scores of 81 and 82, respectively.
The Bulldogs shot a 308 as a team on the loop, just two behind 10th-place Brown University. No teams finished the round under par, as St. John's leads the field with a 289 (+1). Boston College's Andy Mai finished the first five under with a 67 to pace the individual field of 89 golfers.
The second round, originally to be played Monday afternoon, will finish out Tuesday due to heavy fog conditions. The third and final frame will also be played Tuesday in South Kent, Conn.
