SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Conor McGovern (Darien, Conn.) and Samuel Russell (Southborough, Mass.) sit tied for 50th overall and lead the Bryant University golf team with first-round scores of 80 after the opening day of the 2011 Classic at Shelter Harbor Saturday.
The Bulldogs sit in 14th place in the 15-team field, as newcomer Brendan Allen (Chelmsford, Mass.) enters second-round action tied in the 69th spot with an 83. Senior Spencer Sweitzer (Lunenburg, Mass.) followed Allen up, posting an 84 to sit tied for 72nd, and Grant Certuse (Mansfield, Mass.)'s 86 places the senior in a knot at 78th entering Sunday's final lap.
The Bulldogs' carded a 327 on Day 1 action and must look to make up strides quickly to move up the ladder in the short, two-day competition. Dartmouth College leads the Classic with a 291 on the round and boasts the individual leader in James Pleat, whose first-day 70 is good for one under par.
The Classic at Shelter Harbor wraps up Sunday, Oct. 16 with the final round of action in Westerly, R.I.
