SMITHFIELD, RI - The Bryant University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the addition of Peter Toner and Tom Spinella as assistant men's lacrosse coaches. The announcement was made today by head men's lacrosse coach Mike Pressler and Director of Athletics Bill Smith.
"We couldn't be more pleased with these two new additions to our coaching staff," said Pressler. "We conducted a national search and found the two of the most qualified, enthusiastic and determined young coaches in the college game today. Each will bring something new and exciting to the Bryant men's lacrosse program. We are all eagerly looking forward to taking Bulldog lacrosse to the next level."
Toner comes to Bryant from nearby Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. where he was the head men's lacrosse coach from 2006 to 2007. In his first season, the Lyons enjoyed their best season in school history, going 9-7-1 and earning a spot in the ECAC Division III Championship game. In 2007, three players earned all-conference recognition with six earning academic all-conference honors and one scholar-athlete all-American honor.
A 2003 graduate of Springfield College, Toner helped lead the Pride to three NCAA tournament appearances as a standout defenseman. Named team captain, Toner was a NEILA All-Region selection and selected to the National Strength and Conditioning Association All-America team and participated in two USILA all-star games during his playing career.
Following graduation, Toner was a graduate assistant men's lacrosse coach at Springfield College for two seasons while earning his master's degree in physical education. While serving as an assistant, the Pride would capture two league championships and qualified for one NCAA Division III tournament championship.
Former Skidmore College lacrosse standout, Tom Spinella comes to Bryant from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) where he was an assistant coach this past spring. A native of New Hartford, N.Y., Spinella was a four year standout and served as team captain as a junior and senior.
A three-time All-American at Skidmore, he finished his career as the fourth leading scorer in school history, tallying 143 goals and 27 assists for 170 points. He was an All-Liberty League selection three times and was the college's Senior Athlete Award recipient in 2006.
One of Spinella's finest seasons came as a junior in 2005 when he was named the Liberty League Player of the Year and National All-American. That season, Spinella led the league in goals per game (3.38) and shots (9.75) and was second in points (3.94 per game). He was first on the team in goals (54) and points (63) while helping Skidmore to its first league gtitle and berth in the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history where the Thoroughbreds advanced to the second round.
Spinella was also a three-year member of the Skidmore men's hockey team, serving as captain in 2004. During his career, he tallied 15 goals and nine assists in 66 career games.
In addition to his playing career, Spinella has been an assistant coach and instructor for numerous lacrosse and hockey programs. He served as an assistant coach for the Adirondack Empire State lacrosse team in 2005 and worked with the Saratoga Springs High School lacrosse program in 2004 and 2005. In ice hockey, Spinella was an instructor at the Exeter Hockey School and the Hamilton College Hockey School. A 2006 graduate of Skidmore with a degree in exercise science, Spinella has volunteered with the United State Cerebral Palsy Foundation.
