Men's Lacrosse Season Preview: Best Addition Is A Re-Addition In the Midfield

February 5, 2008

BRYANT MEN'S LACROSSE PREVIEW CONTINUED:

MIDFIELD:

Experience will be another valuable asset for the Bulldogs this season as a solid group of starters are back with a year under their belt.  The Bulldogs ran four midfield units during the fall.

The first unit is led by returning starters Jim Long (Durham, NH) (17g,12a), a junior, and sophomore Brad Burton (Hauppauge, NY) (7g,7a).  Long is an athletic scorer who sees the field well and gives the team an added dimension offensively

"We have our first unit back from last year with Jim Long and Brad Burton," said coach Pressler.  "Jim had a really good season last year and looks great coming into the new season."

Seniors Jesse Rose (Port Jefferson Station, NY) (3,3) and Zach Rosenow (Oyster Bay, NY) (6,6) and juniors Corey Crosbie (Salem, MA) (7,5) and Alex Pfau (Bel Air, MD) (3,5) should see plenty of playing time, while sophomores Bryant Amitrano (Valley Stream, NY) and Ryan Tibbitts (Watervliet, NY) will be in the mix.  At 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Amitrano gives the team added muscle defensively.

Pressler is also excited about the crop of middies as well, with Shawn Corcoran, converted attackman Matt Larson (Cheshire, CT), Gary Crowley (Scituate, MA) and Greg Lehane (Southlake, TX), and Kyle Desjarlais (North Kingstown, RI) generating some buzz.

One of the biggest keys to the team's success will be in how well face-off specialist Andrew Hennessey (Wading River, NY) rebounds from an injury that kept the sophomore out last season. Hennessey returns after a medical redshirt season that forced the All-American to miss all but the opener last season.  His ability to control the tempo from the start will be crucial in the team's success.

"The greatest addition is the re-addition of Andrew Hennessey.  He is fully recovered from his injury and in fact comes into the season in tremendous shape.  Without him in the lineup, we never really had the ball in so many games."

LONG STICK MIDFIELD

Senior Vince Zorskas (Port Washington, NY) (3A, 41GB) earns the nod at longstick middie.  The veteran was a steady and reliable defender last season, logging perhaps the most playing time of anyone, but he'll benefit with the addition of newcomer Anthony Iannello (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY).  Iannello was a standout at Sachem High School and was invited to the U-19 U.S. Lacrosse team tryouts.

"Vince is our most veteran and impact players.  We ran him in the ground with our lack of depth last year, but he was able to hold his own and was so valuable.  Now he'll have some capable help with freshman Anthony Iannello."

Junior short-stick  Matt McAllister (East Quogue, NY) (2G, 3A, 21 GB) and Matt Tyburski (Mendham, NJ) (2,2,21) will shoulder the short-stick defense duties.

"Shortsticks Matt McAllister and Tyburski have great chemistry.  They both are coming off excellent seasons and there are not two better competitors with a toughness we need than those two.  Freshman Austin Thomas will be a backup and provide much needed depth we didn't have last year."
