OLD WESTBURY, NY - Second-ranked NYIT raced out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as the Bears cruised to a 14-6 win over No. 6 Bryant University in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday. The loss snaps a two-game win streak for the Bulldogs (3-2). NYIT remains undefeated at 4-0.
NYIT took a 6-0 lead with on an even-strength goal by Jeremy Hobson to start the second quarter before Bryant would finally get on the board when Brad Burton (Hauppauge, NY) set up Brian Kaufmann (Putnam, NY) with 9:57 left in the second. For Kaufmann it was his eighth goal of the season.
The defense took over for the rest of the quarter before Ryan Amengual beat Bryant goalie Michael Kennedy (Port Jefferson Station, NY) with a goal with under two minute to go before the half. But Kaufman and Matt McKeefrey (Melville, NY) hooked for the second Bryant goal of the afternoon with 16 seconds left in the half.
NYIT would stretch the lead to 12-4 after three and 13-4 at the start of the final quarter before Kevin Hoagland (Glastonbury, CT) scored back-to-back goals in a three minute span to made it 13-6. But that would be as close as the Bulldogs would get on the afternoon.
Keith Henderson and Austin Carino each scored three goals while Hobson and Kevin Hennessey added a pair. Henderson's three goals raises his season total to 24 in four games.
Bryant will return to action next weekend when the Bulldogs
travel to Syracuse, NY for a big showdown with top-ranked and
defending national champion Le Moyne on Saturday, March 22 at 1
p.m.
