BULLDOG MEN'S LACROSSE NAMES 2009 CAPTAINS
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Head coach Mike Pressler is pleased to announce the naming of seniors and Bryan Kaufmann, Matt McAllister and Kevin Hoagland, as well as graduate student and three-time All-American Zack Greer as captains of the 2009 Bryant University men's lacrosse team.
The four upperclassmen will guide the Bulldogs into their debut season at the Division I level, as Bryant prepares for tough competition in the spring of 2009.
"We are so pleased to announce the four captains for our inaugural Division I season in the spring of 2009," said Pressler, who enters his third year as Bryant head coach. "The coaching staff couldn't be more pleased with the selection of these four by their peers."
Kauffman enters 2009 as one of the team's top returning attackmen. Now a two-time captain of the men's lacrosse team - he and Hoagland both repeat as captains after leading the 2008 squad to a school-record 14 wins last season - the Putnam Valley, N.Y. native finished second on the team in a number of offensive categories last season and looks to lead the Bulldogs again in 2009.
Last year, Kauffman recorded a second-best 57 points and was also No. 2 in goals (35), shots (99) and shots on goal (61). Kauffman led Bryant in man-up goals (10) and assists (22), while collecting 44 ground balls on the year. In the national rankings, the senior was No. 26 in points per game (3.17), No. 31 in goals per game (1.94) and No. 28 in assists per game (1.22). Kauffman was a 2007 USILA All-American, Northeast-10 All-Conference First Teamer and Co-Player of the Year.
McAllister, a senior midfielder from East Quogue, N.Y., appeared in 15 games for the Bulldogs in 2008, recording one goal and one assist as a shortstick defensive midfielder. The senior picked up 19 ground balls on the year and looks to have another strong season in 2009.
A senior attackman from Glastonbury, Conn., Hoagland comes off a career year in 2008 when he led the nation's No. 3-ranked scoring offense in goals, recording a team-high 44 and registering a squad-best 58 points. The two-time second team all-conference selection ranked 25th in the country in points per game (3.22) and 18th in goals per game (2.44) while also chipping in 14 assists on the season.
"For Bryan and Kevin to be elected captain for the second year in a row," said Pressler, "I am so proud and pleased for those two. Matt McAllister has been a great defensive leader, leading by example, and is arguably our best athlete as a shortstick defensive midfielder."
Graduate student and three-time Division I All-American Zack Greer rounds out Bryant's 2009 captains. A transfer from Duke University, Greer enters his second-consecutive year of captainship, only this time, he will lead Bryant into its first DI season. Greer is the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer with 206 goals and has led Duke to a pair of national championship appearances. Greer paced the 2008 Blue Devils with 65 goals and added 30 assists and 50 ground balls. The Whitby, Ontario native earned all-tournament team honors in the 2008 NCAA tournament for his nine tournament goals and eight assists, including a goal and three assists in Duke's 10-9 Final Four loss.
Greer has led the nation in scoring each of his last three seasons, recording 57 goals in 2005, 67 in 2007 and 65 in 2008. His 67 goals in 2007 is the third-highest single-season tally in NCAA history, while his 57 as a rookie set an NCAA record for goals by a freshman.
Across his distinguished collegiate career, Greer has been named National Rookie of the Year (2005), three-time All-American (2005, 2007, 2008), ACC Rookie of the Year (2005), three-time All-ACC selection (2005, 2007, 2008), the Turnbull Award winner as the nation's top attackman (2008), Tewaaraton Trophy finalist and two-time NCAA all-tournament team selection (2007, 2008).
"That Zack has been elected captain by his new teammates in just one month here at Bryant University speaks volumes to who he is and what he represents," said Pressler, who coached Greer at Duke from 2005-06. "Overall, the coaching staff feels the leadership of Bulldog lacrosse is in great hands."
