MASSA EARNS THIRD NEC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONOR OF SEASON
SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- For the third time on the young 2012 season, Bryant University freshman midfielder Kevin Massa (Huntington, N.Y.) garnered Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honors, as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
Massa has been among the most impressive freshmen in the nation in 2012 and was again stellar from the faceoff X Saturday against UAlbany, playing a major role in the Bulldogs' 14-12 victory over the Great Danes, the team's third-consecutive win and first on the road this season.
The rookie midfielder won 23 of the game's 29 faceoffs (.793) and went a perfect 10-for-10 from the X in the second half while picking up a career-high and game-best 13 ground balls. But the New York native contributed more than just from the X, dishing out three assists to mark a game- and career-high for the frosh, who entered the game with just one helper on his young resume.
On the day, four of the Bulldogs' 14 goals came directly off faceoff wins, as Massa, who has taken every faceoff for the Black and Gold this season, leads the league in both faceoff winning percentage (.636) and ground balls (47).
Massa's accolade marks the third for the rookie in his six-game Bryant career and is the Bulldogs' fifth of the 2012 season. The Black and Gold return home to defend their current three-game winning streak and look to stay perfect in Smithfield Saturday when they host Stony Brook University at 1 p.m.
