Men?s Soccer Falls 1-0 in Overtime to Franklin Pierce
October 16, 2004
SMITHFIELD, RI ? The Bryant University men?s soccer team lost 1-0 to Franklin Pierce in overtime today in game played in Rindge, NH.
Freshman goalkeeper Thomas Madden (Saco, Maine) kept the Bulldogs in the match with nine saves, snuffing out some good Franklin Pierce chances in the second half to send the match to overtime. Madden made a great stop on a close-range shot from Ravens senior back Kyle Miller in the 73rd minute and smothered a break-in from McNeil before he could get a good shot off in the 76th.
Franklin Pierce finished the match with a 19-7 shots advantage, but out-shot Bryant 10-1 over the final 51:05. Despite that, Bryant?s had a great chance to steal victory away from the Ravens in the 88th minute as Clint Stonacek (Omaha, Neb.) broke deep into the penalty area with the ball, but Franklin Pierce sophomore back Andre Elphic recovered just in time to clear the ball before Stonacek could get off a shot.
Junior Evan Luster ended the match at 96:05 as sophomore Jason Grier found him with a cross from the right flank for a wide-open header mid-goal from six yards out. Luster?s winner came moments after he bobbled wide-open chance off a cross from grad student Tom McNeil in the 94th minute.
Bryant will return to action Saturday, October 23, when they travel to Assumption. Game time is set for 1:00PM.
